i'm basically trying a fresh install into my upgraded system up to from dos to windows xp sp2, but i'm having some trouble with the windows 98se installation process (as the computer shuts down everytime it boots up.
nothing goes wrong with the installation until it starts configuring my hardware settings, then it gets a fatal exception, at which point i had to reboot my computer, and the above first problem would start to occur.

after grappling with this problem, i'm at my wits ends.

is windows 98se upgrade incompatible with this motherboard?
would i need the full version of windows xp sp2?
or
are parts of the motherboard or the entire motherboard defective?

what would i need to do in order for it to perform normally.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

system specs:

p4 3.0 GHz
512 MB in the board (2000 MB more ready for installation once in xp)
Nvidia 6600
Asus 975x deluxe dh model
ide 160 GB seagate hdd
intel pro network card
sound card

Take a deep breath and exhale. Now what did you mean by the above? Remember we can only know what you tell us clearly.

but i'm having some trouble with the windows 98se installation process

At what exact point in the installation process was the first sign of a problem evident? If it was only after rebooting, was it the very first reboot? Did the file copying portion of the installation complete and then system proceeded to reboot ok and only after trying to start loading windows this happened? If so, you might see if you can make a bootlog, and try disabling all optional things in the bios. By optional I mean everything not needed to finish the install, not everything you won't ever need. This includes things like sound, RAID controllers if your HDD isn't connected to one, or if it's not in raid mode, disabling raid functionality if the raid bios or board bios allows separate function disabling.

At what exact point and what is on screen at that point? Details may be paramount in solving this.

What do you mean "upgrade"? If you had only DOS, windows is not an upgrade, it's an entire OS. Do you not have a windows installation, full version disc, only a windows upgrade disc? Are you trying to continually read files off the optical drive/disc? If so, you might try first making a folder on the HDD, after wiping out the existing installation (if you were going to format the drive) and copying the Win98 setup files, about 125MB worth at least in the folder with the setup file and the *.cab files, all those files by other names too). Next you would run the setup from the HDD files without even having the CD in the drive.

Take another deep breath. What does Windows XP Sp2 have to do with this? I doubt your board is defective, there is a very low chance something like that is the cause.

You might edit the system.ini file after set copies it to the HDD (copy to a floppy or whatever and edit on another system to include the vcache fix for 512MB+ on win98 (google will find it, search for "vcache 512MB".

You might set the bios power management to APM not ACPI if it allows that. You might seek bios updates for your motherboard, for all we know it has some bug that has nothing to do with Win 98/XP/whatever. Also check other things unrelated to OS like memory stability (run memtest86+ for a few hours). We just don't know the history of the system at all, was it running fine up till now and if so why the sudden no-OS situation with only DOS and trying to install an OS that fails?
