Hi
I have had my self built gaming pc for about a month now and I am beginning to get problems with anti surge feature on my Asus M5A78L-M LX3 Motherboard. I will be gaming for about an hour then suddenly the pc will restart and the bios screen pops up with the message:"power supply surges detected during the previous power on. Asus anti-surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power supply".
I have heard that the anti surge feature is over sensitive but I am scared to turn it off in case it fries everything!
Is this the motherboard acting up or the psu?

Psu: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/500w-cooler-master-thunder-b500-b-series-85-eff-120mm-silent-pwm-fan-green-erp-psu

I know coolermaster isn't the most reliable brand but it was all I could afford! I don't have another psu to test 🙁

Solution
Hold up, PLEASE.

STOP!

Go to local hardware store, get yourself a 3 prong circuit tester. These are like $10, and have 3 lights. You plug it into the wall socket and usually lights up 2 amber for correct circuit.

You need to ensure your wall wiring is proper. Why?
Because testing another power supply when your wall wiring is bad will cause the power supply to be bad as well.

Maybe the Asus anti-surge is triggered by your bad wiring in your house? Improper grounding?
Have it checked out.
ASUS Anti-Surge looks for over-voltage and under-voltage conditions from the power supply.

Since the Anti-Surge is being triggered that indicates an unstable power supply unit.

To troubleshoot the problem you need a known stable working power supply unit to swap with.

I have my pc behind a APC UPS, and a Belkin 3 phase surge protector. The surge protector was a grand alone. It works great, considering when surges hit, the lights explode in their sockets (usually just take the lamp shade off and dump it).

The Asus surge feature always trips on nothing, the apc and belkin trip when real surges happen.

Turn the feature off, get yourself a real battery backup.
I did.

I am scared to turn off anti surge in case my psu is actually surging! I really need to test my pc with another one but I don't have one!

This is a new build. All the parts are under a month old!
Don't have any surge protection apart from that on the motherboard.

I did a lot of research in the Internet and decide to turn off anti surge, it still shut down after 40 minutes or so.
To me that leaves 2 options:
- A faulty power supply
Or
- The wiring upstairs in my house is bad. (The house is about 40 years old i think)

I will try and run my pc downstairs for a couple of hours and let you know how I get on. Failing that, I will take it into scan where I bought all my parts from and get them to test it...
What do you think?

I still think that is unstable psu.

I think you might be right...
It is currently running downstairs and it hasn't cut out yet though so it could just be the wiring.
I am going on holiday tomorrow so I will call into scan where I bought my parts from and see if they will test it for me.

A friend said that maybe the psu is drawing too close to its max output so the psu cuts out to avoid damage. But at the same time he thinks my pc should only be using around 300w power!

I am running radeon 7870 and amd fx 6300. So it can't be that power hungry, surely? Maybe I just got a bad psu that can't reach anywhere near what it says it should! I don't really know!

Ok. I have been gaming on my pc for the past hour or so while it was plugged in downstairs and it has not cut off once!
That means that my pc is fine, it is just the wiring upstairs that was bad. I will get an electrician to check it out once I am back off my holidays in a couple of weeks. I go tomorrow and I can't wait!

Well anyway, I have has no problems using my pc plugged in downstairs. It could have just been a fluke so I will test it again in a bit.
If it does start to do it again I will send my psu back as it has a 3 year warranty. I will invest in the circuit tester anyway as no doubt it will be useful if anything g like this happens again.

Yay!
Thanks guys!

I had the same problems after adding an upgraded video card.. First I upgraded my bios and unswitched the surge protector.. which is a new thing most boards don't have this feature.. most think its really a worthless feature.. My games now played.. but soon crashed again and again.. My next new theory.. my power supply was to weak.. I had 550 an upgraded to 700.. problems solved.

Any ideas?
I recently installed my GTX 770.
I only have trouble during game play.
For the last 3 weeks…
Every 30-40min playing BF3 it kicks me out the game, today it crashed to the Bios.
The following error message at the Bios points to my PSU (which is three months old)
“Power supply surges detected during the previous power on ASUS anti-surge was triggered to protect system from unstable supply unit.”

My Rig
Intel Core i7-4771 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Corsair H80i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Asus Sabertooth Z87 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB
Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Corsair RM 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Superclocked with ACX Cooler 4 GB GDDR5 256-Bit

Contact Nvidia support.. most new systems you gotta get new drivers for everything installed new. I had the same problems I upgraded my power then changed my cables.. solved my crashing problems.. oh yea I did fiddle on Asus motherboard bio's.. improvement.. not really sure.. when booting up press the delete key over and over.. yep I did turn my anti surge off.. most mother board don't have this feature so I heard.. many others at Tom's are more involved than I am.. just wait for everyone else to reply..

had this problem after adding GTX970... have a fairly new Corsair 750 PSU. Swiched off the anti surge protection. Worked well for a couple of days and then had one switch off again... but not like 3-4 like previously.

Want to try to use a power plug downstairs to see if it helps.
if problem is not resolved Im getting a new PSU...

hello i have the same problem and every time i play game my pc will reboot and show me the same message i tired some solution such as update my bios and disable the protector but the problem didn't solved
my pc
core i7 4790k
asus gtx970
coolermaster v750 gold
asus z97 pro gamer
please help me

Hi mate,

I have done various things, but in the end, I simply bought a new PSU - problem solved now.
I had a very good corsair psu but it got busted due to overheating. My rig was standing on a thick carpet which was blocking the fan.

Hope that helps

i cant't be sure that my psu is broken
i kept the psu in very good condition and i check it it was fine

I know... I thought exactly the same way. Tried everything and simply didn't want to admit I need a new psu. I was struggling for about 6 months with this, trying everything I could... nothing worked. Simple PSU swap fixed everything even though I had to fork out some cash for it...

so i should buy new psu with different brand ?or should i use my warranty?
and in case to buy new psu which brand would you recommend?

If you have a warranty, I'd surely use it.
As for the other brands - I'd go with 80+ rated known brands. Many threads about psu brands even on this site.

I bought EVGA - not the super popular brand but I didn't want to spend too much again on psu. After all, my Corsair premium psu went bust like some non rated low cost crap...

[Problem]Anti-Surge error message in Sabertooth Z87 (for while SOLVED)

I BELIEVE THAT WORK FOR ANOTHER MOTHERBOARD ASUS WITH ANTISURGE SOFTWARE BIOS

04 - 1 Hidro Cooler H100i Corsair with 2 fans in-take
05 - 1 CPU Intel 7 4770K (before in OC 4.3, 4.3, 4.2, 4.1 using OC software motherboard)
06 - 1 Corsair Module 8GBytes Vengeance in 1866Mhz

>
FOR +1 YEAR I USED OC 4.4Ghz AND NONE PROBLEM
.
.
NOW SAME WITH NO "O.C." OR "O.C. IN DOWNGRADE" I HAVE THIS MSG ANTISURGE ERRO
.
.

my UPS 110volts OK
my AVR (voltage regulator) 110v OK
my SOURCE ENERGY (in my HOUSE) 110v OK
.
.Always look in new BIOS update in ASUS site official

.
1 day occurred the error: ANTI-SURGE error show down or up voltage (I believe that later version 2103 BIOS update year 2014) but nothing change in my use. Then, I buy one UPS and later (some month) again occur the error and now more frequently....

I took the PSU to a computer technician and electrical engineering , and he tested the PSU and categorically said she had no problem of production order or power consumption. So it is not true to ASUS message anti -surge up because the motherboard can not afford to know the amount of energy that was entering the PSU but what was being consumed by componenetes the system ( motherboard , cards, memory , etc .. ..)

So what I did was as follows: (MY SOLUTION AND WORKING FOR WHILE)

I did downgrade the BIOS to version v0801 (year 2013 - Original Sabertooth Z87 dvd) through the USB stick

For long while, no longer was the message of ANTI_SURGE

The most interesting is that I was for more than one year using an overclocked 4.4GHZ and NEVER HAS such a mistake, and after a certain BIOS update is the first error occurred.
