Is it possible to upgrade RAM in my Asus Atheros laptop? I can't find any information about this model online. It has 6GB now, I would like to upgrade to 8GB minimum

Solution

Okay, I did some further research, and it turns out that the Vivobook Q301L series is the same as the Vivobook S301L series, but is only sold by specific retailers. Not that finding that out was any help when it came to the memory advisor @ Crucial, as all it said was that the S301L carries a maximum of 8GB of RAM, but gave no suggested upgrades. Went to youtube and found a disassembly/RAM upgrade video for your model...

'Crucial currently does not have any compatible upgrades available for your particular system.'

Does that mean it's not possible to upgrade, or they just don't have information on it? I ask because when I don't do the scan, I just enter the information, it doesn't list the Atheros model, or the model number

Ah, I see what I did. I think the model # then is Q301L. But I get the exact same problem. That's not an option in the drop down list when I try to check if it's upgradeable.

As you stated, it apparently comes with 6GB of RAM. A 4GB stick is soldered to the main board, but there is a removable 2GB stick in a slot just on top of it (both hidden under a metal cover inside the notebook). The guy in the video read off the part number from the 4GB stick he bought for the upgrade to his. I wrote it down: 1RX8 PC3L-12800S. Here are the results of a Google search for that part number: https://www.google.com/search?q=1RX8PC3L-12800S&oq=1RX8PC3L-12800S&aqs=chrome..69i57.1310104j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Hope this helps. 😀

Oops, just saw your post. That RAM can be found for about half that price (see my post above this one).

No negative consequences possible that I'm aware of.

Yes! Thank you so much! I was hoping to upgrade to more than 8GB( total ) but it seems as if that's the max, so i'll guess I should just stick to getting a 4GB stick

You're very welcome! Glad to help.

I found conflicting reports about RAM upgrades on these models. Some folks (including Crucial) claim 8GB is the max, but some people say that they have installed 12GB and it works fine. Don't know who to believe.

Yeah, I just checked out the Kingston website, and they say the max is 12GB -_- Oh well, worth a shot I guess! Thank you again for all your help!

My pleasure. Good luck with the upgrade. Keep us posted! 😀

interesting. Then why does my 2014 Asus Laptop have the model number listed as Atheros AR5B125 on the back?

Probably the model of the wireless card. See this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Atheros-AR5B125-Wifi-Wlan-Half-Mini-PCI-E-Card-Laptop-Wireless-Network-Adapter-/171331351733

Or this: https://www.amazon.com/Atheros-AR5B125-670036-001-WiFi-WLAN/dp/B00BTZOJCK

Any chance you could post a photo?

Yes, I think you are right - I should have Googled a little more before replying...!

I'm having trouble finding my dang model name/number and I guess I googled the wifi card name and number...

I'm trying to research and update the RAM but I can't freaking find any info in or outside of my laptop.

Could you possibly enlighten me? XD

Note: this was my husbands laptop. So my lack of nowledge about it shouldn't be all that surprising.

Try running the scanner here:
