Hi Im looking at a new PC build specifically for audio and was planning on getting an Asus B360 plus motherboard and possibly a i9 9900k CPU. Now I know that the B360 isnt the best motherboard out there but I still need a PCI slot for an RME HDSP soundcard which is pretty essential. It states on the Asus site that the i9 is supported (with latest bios) but would I be getting the full benefit of the i9 in this board or would I be just as well getting say an i7 9700k? The benchmarking doesnt seem that different and I sure the benchmark specs don't translate into audio performance either...
Thanks for any help!
cheers
Phil

Solution
You don't want to use a B360 motherboard with the 9900k for a few reasons.

To begin with, it might require a BIOS update to even support the 9900k, which would mean you'd need an 8th Gen Intel CPU to get it updated as that board does not have BIOS flashback for updating without a supported CPU installed.

To avoid any such issues you want to stick to B365 or Z390, and Z390 would be much preferred especially if you plan to run a memory kit with a faster speed than 2666mhz. You will not be able to do so with any other chipset than Z390 or Z370, and again, Z370 will likely need a BIOS update first to support that CPU if it is not already updated (Same with B360) to a version that supports that CPU.

Additionally, on top of any potential...

Additionally, on top of any potential BIOS or memory support issues, this is a lower class chipset and overall quality board. It is a middle of the road (maybe slightly to the lesser side) in terms of power phase and VRM configurations and will likely suffer with that 9900k installed. I'd either opt for a better chipset and board or drop to the 9700k but be sure to verify that the chipset either supports the 9th Gen CPUs out of the box or already comes with the latest BIOS version preinstalled.

Thanks- thats super helpful!

I have the Z390 motherboard and the i9 9900k works so great and just wondering if you do dicide to go for that option what cooler have you got only asking due to i9 9900k can get abit hot!. I have the CORSAIR Hydro H100i and have 4.97ghz with idle temps of 29-40.

I reinstated your post, because I feel like it IS an important question since the 9900k does not come with a cooler AND the majority of aftermarket coolers out there are not going to be sufficient for running the 9900k.

It might also be a factor in what kind of chipset or board model you want to go with as well. There is definitely a difference in thermal response between lower and higher quality boards, and a very good cooler can sometimes help to make a difference.

So sorry been sleepy all day should of worded it more better. I know that different motherboards have different kinda features and differences. J removed my comment. Sorry again to op
