I built my machine almost exactly a year ago, bought an Asus BC-12B1ST bluray drive with it. The drive came barebones with no software, but I hadn't really payed any attention to it until recently, because it had been working fine for the rare times I use an optical drive at all.
Then, I actually acquired some blurays. I purchased Cyberlink PowerDVD, but my drive will not play blurays. The drive itself shows up in My Computer, but if i have a bluray inserted all it says is "please insert disk" in PowerDVD and other playback programs. CDs and DVDs seem to be working fine.
I'd like to avoid dropping $50-100 on another drive when this one supposedly has the hardware capability to play blurays, and I've looked everywhere for any resources I can think of that might help.
Machine specs, if that gives any bearing:
OS: Windows 8.1
Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 270X
CPU: AMD FX8350
MoBo: AsRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0

Playing Blu-ray requires a software solution due to licensing through OneBlue. There are no free ones I am aware of but this comparison guide may be of help finding one that'll work for you http://blu-ray-player-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
Note that it is advised to try a trial edition to ensure it works with your system before committing to purchase.
