I have a CM6870 desktop. For some reason, the CPU fan always runs at high speed. I tried minimizing cpu fan speed using speedfan, and it doesn't go below 3500rpm.

I tried modifying the bios settings. I saw an option for "Clean Level" and tried modifying it to "Disable", "Silent". Still I can't reduce the fan speed.

Please let me know if you have any pointers?

Thank you romirez. As a temporary solution, I connected the CPU cooler to CHA_FAN1 and Chasis Fan to a direct power source. Even though CHA_FAN1 has 3pins, it has PWM and the dynamic range is much higher. Speed (or rpm) goes to zero if I manually reduce the % in speedfan to zero. So, it seems like Cooler is okay and the problem is with the CPU_FAN connector since it's not sending the right control.

I added a control in speedfan to adjust the speed based on cpu temperature, and this seems to work for now. I don't hear the loud noise when the computer is idle. Thanks much for your help, I appreciate it.

Thank you for the response. The cooler has "13071-002201DP" written on it which looks like a model number: http://www.asusparts.eu/Asus-13071-002201DP. It has 4 pins connected to motherboard.

4pins= RPM must work.
BTW check if it connected to CPU_FAN connector on motherboard.
Cant get any info on that cooler.
So, best way to test if cooler is bad - to use another 4pin cooler.
No need to remove radiator from CPU, just disconnect CPU_cooler from motherboard and connect another cooler with 4 pins.

Notice: Dont forget to track temperature of CPU to not overheat him.

Cooler is connected to CPU_FAN outlet. I was trying to experiment, but the motherboard doesn't have any other 4 pin outlet. By the way, RPM does work -- by changing the % in speedfan, I can increase & decrease the fan-speed, except that the speed doesn't go below 3500 rpm even if I manually set the % to 0.

I will try connecting a different cooler. Do you have any recommendations on a quieter cooler that I can purchase?

Also, do you know of any other s/w suites for controlling fan speeds? My default Asus Suite doesn't include "fan xpert", so I tried installing it and ran into an error "fan xpert doesn't support this model".

In your situation is better to use hardware methods of reducing RPM.
1. Fan speed reducer

2. Fan controller
