I want to upgrade my CPU, and I'm just wondering what are some of the best ones that are compatible with this motherboard. I was looking at the AMD FX-9590 Eight-Core, but from what I can see they are not compatible? I'm not good with all this stuff so I'm a bit lost at the moment.

Is it worth upgrading my motherboard since it's fairly old at this stage?

The best the crosshair III supports is PhenomII CPUs. FX CPUs are not supported. You could disable 2 cores and try and overclock it. A phenom II x4 at 4GHz Is not THAT far behind an FX but the x6 was never a good choice. Otherwise is time to build a new rig.
The AMD FX-9590 is a (and this is personal opinion) terrible processor.

It is essentially a slower AMD processor binned for performance and factory overclocked. It places an unprecedented strain on motherboards and their VRMs. You need to make sure you get a really top-tier motherboard with robust components and pay special attention to airflow over the motherboard components.

In addition, pay attention to the fact that AMD advises >1000W PSU. This is to make sure that the rails feeding the processor carry enough Amperage. So it means that you also have to pay special attention to the PSU in your rig - not all PSUs will support it.

Edit: Once you consider the price of the processor, the new motherboard and perhaps a new PSU, you may as well start looking at a much cheaper and more efficient Intel i5 solution that will outperform the AMD processor by a mile and a league.

Thanks for the quick response. My current PSU is 850W, and I can't afford to upgrade my whole rig. Any advice on what the best CPU would be to go with my current motherboard? I currently have an AMD Phenom II X6 1050T

sorry, maybe someone else more into AMD processors can help you out there. Good luck, though.

This may tell you the ranges to look at: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/CROSSHAIR_III_FORMULA/specifications/

From there you can probably look at a place like CPUbenchmarks.com and get an idea.

Also, you can enter your motherboard on this page and get a full list from Asus: https://www.asus.com/support/cpu_support

It worked for me when I entered "Crosshair III Formula"
