I have an ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z motherboard and I was looking through the QVL Memory List and found an entry that makes no sense to me. Under the DDR3 2133 MHz Capability is an entry for G.SKILL F3-17000CL11Q2-64GBZLD 64GB (8X8GB) DS 11-11-11-30 1.5v. The problem is there are only 4 memory slots on this motherboard, so unless there are 4 hidden memory slots on this motherboard somewhere, there is no way I can install this 8 card kit into the ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z motherboard.

My question; is there some secret to installing this memory kit on this motherboard? Maybe the top comes off the cards and you plug them together piggyback like???

I asked ASUS about this and did not get a response.

I thought this might be a miss-print but under the DDR3 1866 MHz Capability is another entry G.Skill f3-14900CL10Q2-64GBZLD 64GB (8X8GB) DS 10-11-10-30 1.5v Hmmm...

There are other strange entries like 12 GB (6x2GB) and 24GB (6 x 4GB)

Thank you in advance for your response.

OK that is interesting, I know it was ONLY a few years ago but in terms of computer hardware, that is "ancient history (LOL)".

Maybe I can find someone that purchased that kit and only used 4 sticks and is willing to sell me the other 4 sticks.

Thank you again for the information. It just seemed really odd that in the QVL for a motherboard with only 4 slots you would find a kit with 8 sticks. I was kind of hoping there was some adapter that would convert a single slot into a double slot. (sigh)

Post a link to the qvl.

REALLY??!! Wow I went looking for an ASUS MB that have 8 slots and could not find one that also supported the AMD FX9590.

This whole topic started because my current motherboard an ASUS M5A99 decided it could no longer handle the FX9590 and went out in a cloud of smoke and fire. Blew the top off several capacitors. Hence buying the new (used) ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z motherboard.

That is an AWFUL CPU. Don't waste any time or money on it.

You won't find an AM3/3+ motherboard with more than 4 slots.

There were DDR3 based Intel platforms with additional memory channels and slots.

Stop
Do not spend ANY more money on that CPU and/or motherboard.

Unless someone gives you parts for free....it is a lost cause.

With the Dlcd site showing a 8x kit for a mobo with 4 slots I would wonder if I'm looking at the proper qvl.
You are forgetting how DDR3 memory used to be packaged and sold, as mentioned previously in this thread.

Not a big deal now.

Those old sets included matched sticks, paired for dual-, triple-, and quad-channel uses. The memory itself was identical, just a matter of how many matched sticks were in the set. You could buy with 2, 4, 6, or even 8 matched sticks. Of course, the motherboard question posed here could only use up to four. Any extras could be used in another system.

My error I did not scroll enough in the pdf's I linked to.
The 8x kits are shown.
