I am putting together a new computer build on PC Part Picker and I came across a motherboard that fits my needs (a lot of USBs, SATAs, no on board video - because I always have issues). I found one, however PCPartPicker is telling me that the chip set may need a BIOS update with a CPU compatible with the older BIOS, which would suck for me because that means I have to get two CPUs in order to use the board, I don't want to go through that trouble.

Here is the PCPartPicker build

Has anyone had a build with that CPU and Motherboard, if so, did you have any issues with BIOS?
If not, in your opinion should I risk it?
Thanks!

I am and I have this board, its excellent. Check the Box actually when you get it, depending how long its been on the shelf it may be updated to the latest BIOS already. if not just follow the instructions in the manual for using BIOS flashback, I recommend version 6201, thats what I am using now.

That video is 3 months old, before the latest AGESA updates were released, hers...
1. X370 will support with potential BIOS update, AMD will lend you a old CPU to boot the MB and let you update BIOS, no need for buying 2nd cpu
2. X370 is not recommended since 2700X can not fully run on that chipset, go for X470 if you really need 2700X and want to run full capacity
3. Any reasons why you want that X370 MB specifically?

Hi diamondpumpkin1 and Yes you should not have issues.

The Crosshair VI HERO specs support 2700x and others have success.
It is recommended to update Chipset and Bios to 6201 using flashback prior to installing CPU.
On Crosshair vi hero you can update Bios using rear I/O panel with just power to the MB.

Particularly because of the plethora of ports. My case can hold 6 drives and having 8 SATAs would be amazing, USBs wouldn't be that big of an issue as long as I had a few, I could always just buy a hub if I didn't have enough. I'm also not a fan of the onboard video, it's given me errors before and the Ryzen 7 2700x doesn't support it, so any board that depends on CPU may nag me.

Edit: I have updated the build with a X470 motherboard, same amount of SATAs, however it has onboard that depends on CPU, I'm figuring it will work, but it will probably bug me if I don't put in my video card.

1. You can update this board using the BIOS flashback built in WITHOUT a CPU

2. Completely not true, You can overclock the 2700X to the same levels on a X370 as an X470. Also the latest BIOS AGESA versions include support for XFR2 and Precision Boost 2. Overclocked or stock it will literally run the same on the Crosshair VI

3. Its the best overclocking board released for Ryzen, and while there is an X470 version, you can likely get the X370 version for notably less.

I am usually not one to recommend expensive boards, so I would probably recommend this one. It seems to be getting really good user reviews. Not something I am used to seeing these days. Also no current AMD boards video ports work unless you have an APU installed.

One problem with that board, only got 6 SATAs, I plan on having 6 drives alone, then if I want my CD ROM for reinstalling windows or some other program I have on a CD (don't ask why I still have things on CDs) I'll need a 7th SATA.

I certainly hope you're right, I switched the board back to the CROSSHAIR VI HERO. This board will save me a pretty penny.

I will, but I have 3 drives right now, really old ones. Still good drives, nothing wrong with them, I don't really want to replace something that isn't broke.

Drive 1: Western Digital Blue 500GB SATA
Drive 2: Western Digital Blue 1TB SATA
Drive 3: Western Digital Blue 500GB IDE>SATA (Needs an adapter to work)

For #2, gamenexus seems to show differently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIkQCszgW5Q

They could be wrong but can you show me X470 has no improvements for 2700X? Thanks. StoreMI also seems to be a good feature on X470 :)

That video is 3 months old, before the latest AGESA updates were released, hers an article from a bit after that saying its possible to use XFR2 and PB2 as long as the BIOS is updated

https://www.fudzilla.com/news/pc-hardware/46138-amd-talks-about-xfr2-and-precision-boost-2-technology

So far all Gigabyte boards do it, some AsRock and some ASUS, I don't now about MSI but I bet they have as well.

Also I never said X470 has "no improvements", but there are not many other than built in faster ram XMP profile support (3466 vs 3200), meanwhile people have hit 3466 with B-Die ram on the Crosshair VI. Sure StoreMI is missing (good job trying to be cute), and has no relevance to the conversation, its a specific use case drive caching feature, Intel has been doing this with RST for a while. The OP, with 6 drives (I'm assuming one or more are a decent sized SSD) wouldn't even bother. If he did want it Enmotus offers software called FuzeDrive that does the same thing. Or he can buy a hybrid drive.
