I have an ASUS STRIX ROG gaming laptop. It comes with a 1050 gpu installed but for the games i want to play, I need something a little more powerful. I have been looking into desktop GPU's but am not certain if they are compatible with my laptop. Can someone help me find a compatible desktop gpu?

To connect an external gpu, your laptop needs to have thunderbolt 3. If you have it, then you can connect pretty much any gpu you want to your laptop but i'd recommend a Nvidia card since your laptops integrated gpu is from Nvidia and it'll be easier with the drivers. You'll also need a dock for your gpu like the Asus ROG XG station 2.

Its very unlikely you'll be able to upgrade the graphics card in your laptop, these are usually soldered to the board.

There are external GPU options, but these cost a lot once you have bought the enclosure etc - I would recommend selling/returning the laptop and buying one that already has a suitable gpu.

That said the 1050 is a pretty good GPU, so it might be you just need to use difference graphics settings.
