so, decided to replace isp provided settings-sparse modem/router with something better.

picked one of these up off ebay. ( i know, i know.... )

anyway. removed from box, connected up. turned it on.

power light on, ethernet lights flashy then settle, all normal.

dsl light comes on, so it's TRYING to sync.

router/modem then reboots.

repeat.

tried factory reset.

tried 30-30-30.

tried putting it into rescue mode ( power light flashing slowly and steadily ~ 1 flash a second or so, definitely in rescue mode ) and flashing firmware to latest. error message about " the wireless device is not in rescue mode ".

stays powered on when in rescue mode, though. ( issue clearly not with power delivery )

can't connect directly to router to access gui in rescue mode, obviously. can't connect to router to access gui when powering up normally, either.

any ideas?

Sounds real bad. Not sure what I would do. Some routers have internal serial ports or places you can solder a serial port. I would search for unbricking and your router.

It is kinda strange when I search that part number to buy I don't get much. Newegg sells refurbished ones for $30.
Does it let you get into the router if you do not connect it to the DSL line. You want to do the recovery from a wired port. I did not even know you could attempt rescue mode on wireless. You should be able to load the firmware with the special asus recovery software. In some cases you must load older version of firmware first, there are warnings that you must load version xxxxx on some of the images. You would have to use that older one for the recovery not sure if that is true for your particular router

attempted it over a wired connection. still doesn't let me into the router with the dsl disconnected. still returns 'wireless device is not in resue mode' when trying to flash firmware over the wired connection.
