I have a new build and the Asus EZ update came up saying there was a new update for the bios. I clicked ok for the update. It downloaded the update and said don't turn off or restart the computer while updating. Now all it says is "updating." and it has been sitting there for like 20 mins now.

Is it supposed to take this long? I thought updating the bios required a flash or something. What exactly is this EZ update and what should I do? Sorry I am a new custom PC user.

The motherboard is the Asus Rampage V Extreme the version it is trying to take me to is 0802 from 0603...

Microcity just built this computer a couple days ago so why is there already an update? Thanks.

I usually keep these up to date but I update the BIOS in the BIOS . Using ez flash.

Its like the other programs ASUS, MSI / GB put on their sites. Like AIcharger, Appcharger, Liveupdate.

All they do is crash windows. These programs let you overclock etc. Charge Ipods faster with a USB port.

Liveupdate is like ez flash in Windows. It updates the BIOS

But it can also do the same thing. If it freezes and if you turn it off, it'll brick your system.

If you've got a recent ASUS mobo, you'll have more chance of reflashing the BIOS than a GB or MSI mobo tho. With crashfree BIOS. And mobos that support BIOS flashback.

It's better if you get the update off the site, extract it.

Then flash it in the BIOS its safer if it supports ez flash. Doing it in windows can brick it if it freezes

If it supports USB BIOS flashback (this mobo doesnt) you can use that as well

But if it bricks it you'll have to use the cd to reflash the BIOS. Since its got a rom on it

Wait what?? So what should I do? Cancel out of the update? WHY would Asus let us update in windows if it could break it???

I have no idea why. But its the lazy way of doing it, instead of going to the site and downloading it

Thats why most ASUS mobos have the ez flash option. Its safer than doing it in windows

But the old version used to let you load the rom.. Most people I think get the update over the internet, and somewhere it freezes the system. And it can brick it if you turn it off

I used it once years ago, BUT I downloaded the update first then flashed it. But if it freezes on you and does nothing, you'll have to turn it off. Then use the cd the mobo came with. Turn it on put the cd in

This will reflash the BIOS. Read the manual

Actually this mobo does support USB BIOS flashback. So thats good. You can get the latest BIOS extract it rename it to whatever the manual says, put it on a flash drive. Plug it in whatever USB port and press reset for 3 secs

Thank you for the overall advise but you still haven't told me what I should do now. It is saying "updating" in the EZ flash program. Is it even doing anything? It is STILL sitting there. Are you saying DO NOT turn this off...DO NOT cancel???

I said I was in windows, and the EZ flash program just said "updating" and was stuck. I will try to cancel out of it. That will probably be safer. I don't think it did anything. I will read up on updating the bios. If the machine is running fine should I just leave the bios alone or you should always keep it up to date? thanks.
