Recently upgraded the hard drive to a SSD and began getting all my drivers updated. First one I install is the "Keyboard adjustment tool" from ASUS' website and keyboard stops working as soon as I run the executable.

What I know so far:

  • -Tried reverting back to old HDD (just a factory reset, all original drivers, etc.) and still doesn't work.
-Uninstalled "keyboard adjustment tool" and reset computer, no luck.
-Tried uninstalling keyboard drivers and reinstalling, no luck.
-Plugged in USB keyboard, USB keyboard works but laptop keyboard still not working.
-Upon inspection, there does not appear to be a button that toggles keyboard functionality.
-Laptop keyboard does not work in BIOS, had to use USB keyboard to get into BIOS.
-Laptop has been lightly gamed on and casually used for a year with consistent driver updates and cleaning.
-Laptop is 1 week out of warranty, RIP me...

So far I believe it is a hardware issue as reverting back to the old HDD didn't fix the issue and because the USB keyboard could function when plugged into the laptop. It is quite mysterious how a software program would cause this problem so I'm not exactly sure where the issue is coming from.

I'm a broke college kid but I have tools and could replace the keyboard if I knew how to get to it but this laptop is different than most I've worked on as it doesn't have the "plate" that just clips in. Please, if anyone could help give any suggestions/ideas I would appreciate it very much!

Update: Called local repair said about $75 for labor + cost of parts. Still looking for cheaper options!

See if you can go into device manager. Check for any devices having problems. You must've botched something when you updated drivers. You need to rollback or reinstall the driver's for the laptops keyboard. As I believe this is a driver issue with the laptop's keyboard--especially because you were doing some driver stuff when this happened. Good luck

Can you do a system recovery? If so do that.

See, I thought this was the problem but I had the original HDD with a fresh install of all the drivers and everything. I plugged it in and ran it and the keyboard was still not functioning. Also, I ran it through the BIOS and the keyboard didn't work in that either, which if it was a solely a driver problem, it would have worked in BIOS.

What was the capacity of the old HDD and the new one?

Old HDD: 1TB
New SSD: 500GB
