I have an ASUS G50VT laptop and recently the screen will go blank but if you press the FN+F6 key it may come back or just flash on then go back off. If I plug in an external monitor that one works just fine. This happens even while in the BIOS setup screen so I can't blame the OS. I have check and reset all the connectors but if that was the problem pressing the key should not recover it. Though of trying a replacement keyboard but if there is another answer I can save the few $ from trying to Easter egg.

Solution
I have had that problem. It may be the CCFL tube in the screen. The inverter may be sensing the increased resistance or something in the tube, and cutting power because it's a wimp.
I repaired mine myself, by purchasing a tube on Ebay for about $30 shipped and taking a part the panel, or just buy a new/used panel on Ebay

Check out the video in the thread. In my latest comment in that video I say the size of tube to get.
