Its cooler is garbage, sounds like a jet engine and thermal throttles, and that's at stock settings.
OCing is out of the question.
Look for a solid aftermarket fan version, also 1080s are running around the same price as 1070s right now, so that's probably a better choice.
Thank you for your reply. Well, I've already gotten that one.. Would the Asus 1070 expedition have been a better choice(I did not go for it because it was more expensive..)?. I"ve seen that someone managed to do like +200 clock and around 300 or so on memory on thr Turbo .. did he just happen to get a good card or..?
EDIT: wait.. thermal throttles at stock settings? That sounds pretty bad 🙁.. where did you find this information?
Wow, that's quite sad.. I can return it, but it would be very, very hard to find one at the price I got this one (because there was a 15% discount at the shop for GPUs at that time and now it's no longer available).
Thank you, but it's a bit difficult to get a new one now.. also, that impementation seems very expensive where I live (Romania). I've found one for like the equivalent of ~$800 and I got the turbo for like ~500.
Thank you all for your help. I'd like to know: how high can a GTX 1070 with better cooling be overclocked? (I'd like some numbers, both for core and mem)
Thank you . I'm a little confused.. someone on NewEgg (in the reviews) claimed this:
"Decent OC results for a basic 1070 card.
~2050 mhz boost clock
~4400 mhz memory clock
Even at max power limit (up to 112%) the card is moderately cool and quiet.". Someone else said "When I received this card, it was clocked around 1683. I overclocked it to about 1893 at 70c stable and that is with auto fan.". Others seemed to say it's not that good for OC. So, does it depend on the chip or something (I mean, I do know it depends somehow, but does it really depend that much?) ?
Ditto.
Did that person also mention the obscene fan speed it needs to run at for that?
Don't take Amazon reviews over people on a forum, always take those with a grain of salt, they're wildly inaccurate 50% of the time.
@madmatt30 I have tried it and it seems to work well. Still, even if I didn't overclock now (but would've liked to.. thinking it would run better.. [I know, maybe this sounds stupid]), I would like to have the option in the future (I'm not at all planning on changing the card soon (I'd like to keep it for [EDIT: many] years]).. I've also got it thinking it would last longer (I mean, things would run well using it).
@Chugalug_ Doesn't seem to have mentioned that, but he said it's "moderately cool and quiet" . Thank you for mentioning about the trustworthiness of reviews.
I've used the 1070 turbo in a couple of builds (primarily because as you say even before the GPU prices shot up it was roughly 25% cheaper than any other model) , never tried overclocking it.
If you can live with the fan noise then I don't think it's a bad card really .
The stock 25% idle fan noise on them kills me though , so so whiney - maybe just me but I found it irritating beyond belief when not gaming.
Upping it to 30% actually reduces the noise believe it or not.
At stock it hits about 75c under moderate load with a good 5% extra fan curve applied, and hits 80-85c under heavy gaming load. Its an alright card if you buy it cheap and run it at stock, but the fan is a pain, and it sounds like a blender.

Indeed, this version was cheaper. Not with that much, but cheaper.. and since I thought there's already been too much spent on the rest of the parts, I went with this one. The other option, a bit more expensive, was the Asus GTX 1070 Expedition. Do you guys think it would have been better? It had two fans.

Really, it doesn't look noisy to me, not in games and not outside. Maybe I'm just not noticing it (I may be used to louder setups or , who knows ). And I'm not a headphones user mostly. I'd really like to try upping the fans to 100% to see how they sound.

I may not be that attentive or maybe I'm used to more noisy setups, but I played like Fallout 4 on max @ 1080p (maybe that's not the most GPU-intensive game, but.. ) and wasn't bothered at all by the sound (actually, I may not have even noticed it.. maybe I should try paying more attention to it to see how it is).
But I'm not really a headphones user (I like almost never use them when playing games or any other case , though for the very, very, very few exceptions there were, I didn't use "never" ).. I'm really more of a speakers guy. I did not use them when playing Fallout
