ASUS GTX 760 Direct CU II OC causes reboots at random

Hello,

I recently replaced an old GPU (Radeon HD4800-series) with the GPU in the title in this system:

OS: Windows 7, 64 ultimate
MB: Gigabyte EX58-ud5 v1.0
PSU: Chieftec CFT-650-14CS (turbo series)
RAM: 3 x DDR3 OCZ 2Go PC3-10666 1333Mhz Gold
Proc: Intel Core i7 920, 2.67GHz

The computer worked fine for little more than a day, with both games, video in HD and web browsing. Then it suddenly shut down, as if the plug was pulled. One or two seconds later the computer restarts. Later on, this occured a few minutes or even seconds after loading windows, regardless of activity. It even occurs in safe-boot mode when idling. The GPU is kept at default OC settings.

Searching previous posts I am no wiser in this matter. I was planning to sweep the HDD and make a clean windows installation. Is this system OK for this GPU? I know the MB supports PCIe 2.0, but the GPU is back-compatible (right?). I have seen a few cases here of people with similar PSUs and MBs having similar problems. Any thoughts?

Oh, and a noob question... how do you check current bios version?

I'd guess it may be the PSU, it's a 4 rail, with only 18 AMPS per rail, so may be just on the edge of running the card

Yeah, I was thinking that was the most likely suspect. The type of problem match the safeguard functions in the PSU. It's 4 "virtual rails", but the actual unit has only 2 PCIe outlets. I don't know how it's distributed practically. The total load possible is more than 50A. I was planning to get a new PSU soon. I will try changing it and see if there's any difference.

I probably have to reinstall windows anyway since the last switch back to my old GPU caused my old drivers to refuse reinstallation. I spare you the details of this, though.

Okay, I bought a new PSU (Seagate x-1050) that should be more than enough. I also flashed the bios and reinstalled windows.

After 3 days it has still not crashed on me so I suspect it works now. I assume it was the PSU part. It said the max load at 12V was 56 A, but that was obviously not the case with my setup.

Thanks to this event and it will take some time for me to trust my PC to function without crashing at random again. Nevertheless... it works. I will update if it decides mess with me again.
