I have read in some reviews that the Asus Maximus VII Hero and the I7-4790k are not compatible out of the box? That you have to first update the BIOS of the Mobo. If this is true this may be an issue for me because I would have no way to update the BIOS. Any input on this?

It's a Z97 board so there should be no problem with a 4790K CPU. And you would be able to update the BIOS anytime there are updates available. When building, I always update the BIOS (if there is an update) on first boot before windows install. I boot into BIOS and check the version and update it if it is not the latest version, then set up the BIOS. Setting up the bios (especially the memory timings & speed) first and foremost seems to make life easier for me. Less problematic...

Awesome thanks for the help. A little off topic but I noticed your running a Noctua NH-D14 on your 4790. I'm split between that or a H100i. How does the NH-D14 perform on that chip?

Do you want my temps at 4.4, 4.6, or 4.8? LOL, it works very well. I put an NF-A15 and NF-F12 on my D14 to replace the non-PWM stock fans. The NF-P14 and P12 worked very well also, but don't run quite as quiet. Not a big difference, but I'm pretty picky.

I don't plan to OC the 4790k until I see a need for it. What are your temps @ 4.4?
