ASUS laptop microphone problem

Hi, so I have a problem with my new headset when plugging in to my ASUS laptop. The laptop has seperate microphone and headphone ports, but the headset only has a single combined jack. I also got a splitter to plug it in, and when i use this the headphones work but the mic will not. On the sounds menu there will only be the laptop inbuilt microphone there, the headset won't show up.

Does anyone have any advice?

Have you checked Sound or Device Manager for any issues in the Windows Control Panel?
