Hi folks,

I'm writing with a particularly strange problem that I'm having with a new build. I got the machine up and running yesterday and spent much of the day painstakingly installing drivers. Once I was finished, I noticed that my mouse -- a cheap Microsoft wireless USB type -- was behaving strangely.

At first, the cursor seemed to be moving choppily and was generally unresponsive in both movement and clicking. However, when I payed closer attention, I noticed that it moved seamlessly when it was on the left side of the display and became increasingly choppy/unresponsive as a moved to the right side. Over time, I've seen the problem come and go, seemingly at random -- one minute everything operates as smooth as butter, the next I can barely move the cursor. Truly bizarre.

Furthermore, I/O performance appears to get worse whenever I plug something else into the USB ports. For example, I could hardly move the cursor at all immediately after plugging in a pair of USB speakers. The ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 motherboard has USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports alike, though it does not seem to make a difference which set of ports I use (nor would I expect it to, but hey, this is a strange problem).

I've never heard of an issue like this and I'm at a loss of what to do. I believe that I have all the problem drivers installed, and the hardware doesn't seem to detect any issues. I've tried using different VGA ports (perhaps it's a display issue?) and I've plugged the mouse into a variety of USB ports, but these have not made an obvious difference in performance. My gut instinct tells me this is a motherboard issue, but I could be mistaken.

Has anyone seen something like this before?

My hardware:

Motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 2x4GB DDR3 1600
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5
Power: Corsair CMPSU 650-TX 650W
Case: Antec 900
Monitor: ASUS VH238H
Mouse: Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000

Solution
That is a pretty unique issue. You have a good power supply so that isn't the issue. All of your other components seem solid from a spec standpoint.

Try a different mouse and let us know if you get the same issue.
