I'm trying to be extra safe and see if the FX-8370 is compatible with the ASUS M5A97? It says it supports the 8350 but nothing about the 8370, is it safe to assume that it's not compatible? I was under the assumption it's the exact same just with a different clock but I can't seem to find anything about this mobo and CPU. I was initially gonna go with the 8350 but I've heard the 8370 is a bit better and uses less power overall but maybe I've heard wrong, any info would be appreciated.

ya, I found you got to go to some other asus site for the plain one [things like that is why I don't use asus anymore ]

ok you are right it does not show support for that chip on your board

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97/HelpDesk_CPU/

with out bios support on the chip it may work but I don't think I would spend just to find out and find it don't -- heck I doubt you would see any difference between it and the 8350 anyway ,, if any it would be so slight .

do the 8350 and be safe then maybe be sorry

Theoretically any socket that supports 8350 should also support 8370. The only fuss that AMD makes about their sockets is how much power a CPU needs, so if it fits...

I remember in the old days when I had a dual-core athlon 64 and tried to fit a quad core phenom. Even then (while it was not supported) it worked, even if shifty. Only needed as BIOS update and it ran perfectly.

Now don't take my word for it, do some research, but it will probably be the same case with you as it was for me.

if you got the m5a97 r2 then yes all you got to do is look at your boards cpu support list and see it will and what bios its supported under .. its that easy

FX-8370(FD8370FRW8KHK, 4.0GHz, 8C, L3:8M, 125W, rev.C0, AM3+) ALL 2501 GO

supported with bios 2501

exactly witch m5a97 do you have ?? theres like 5 different ones ???

I have just installed the fx-8370e on an Asus M5A97 Pro (not rev.2) MBO, and for an hour of Aida64 complete system stress testing, it runs fine. Actually, it seems to run very cool. I'm using a basic aftermarket air cooler (some LC cheapest type), and it didn't exceed 53C after an hour of stress test. I'm not sure if a regular 125W fx-8370 would run on this MBO, but my 95W "e" version does. Also, I don't know if an addition of non PRO M5A97 would work.

Thanks. It's not for enjoyment though, but pure business. I've built it as a render machine where I need it for multi-core processing. And I must say it is some 5-10% slower than i7 4770 for my purposes, but it is also almost half the price of 4770. FX-8370 seems unbeatable in terms of multi core performance for money. I wonder if I will be able to squeeze more out if through OC on my MBO and entry level air cooling. If I get any boost, I'm buying few more of FXs for sure.
