Hi i have been trying to overclock my gtx 970 on my new motherboard an Asus Maximus Formula Vii but if i adjust the core clock or memory clock even slightly above the boost clock the drivers stop working and it recovers. I don't really know what could be causing this i have tried rolling back the drivers removing them etc but nothing helps. Id just like to see what this card is capable of as im interested to see if there is any performance gain from doing this.

Could this have anything to do with the motherboard?.

The card is a EVGA GTX 970 FTW Edition. BASE:1216MHz / BOOST:1367MHz

Hey Tommy, Im not the most tech savy person and can't offer a solution to this but I can tell you I have a Evga Gtx 970 FTW with the same base clocks sitting in a Asus Maximus Formula VII and I was able to get a +125/ +560 stable on my rig. I have a Intel i7-4970k OC to 4.6 MHz also, I don't know if that could have anything to do with it, not sure what your Cpu is. But have some faith im sure you can figure something out cause it worked for me.

We have the same specs except my i7-4790k is not overclocked. What cooler are you using to cool it?. im waiting on parts for a custom loop to arrive but just out of curiosity.
Also what ram are you using iam beginning to wonder if ram may be an issue it is on my list of things to replace and since i have a build coming up i will probably take the opportunity to change it then.

hmm i might swap my ram out of my other computer and see if that makes a difference its the same as yours.
Also does the h80i do well with your 4790k i have a h100i and it honestly sucks.
What sort of temps do you get?

My H80i is set up as an exhaust and it does fairly well. I usually have ambient temps of 22-24 and it idles at about 32-34 but on AIDA 64 Stability my 2nd core spikes to 92 max as a whole its about 88 (Ran it for 1 1/2 hours) but under gaming load (Assassins Creed 4, World of Warcraft, Warthunder) its about 50-60c.

Interesting I honestly can't see the h100i doing the job but my idea of a safe max temp at any load when overclocked is well below 90. Although this is most likely from doing overclocks for other people where I want it to be stable for as long as possible.
I will swap the ram today and have a look over my temps with a slight OC.

idle 40 under load 90 and above. and its push exhaust. IMO the cooler sucks there is no way i would would run a stress test for very long.

Yikes. You have a H100i and its giving you temps like that. Have you made sure the pump works and that its seated properly on the Cpu. Some people were saying the Asus MB's were a bit thin and that the way the screws are with the Corsairs the heatsink doesnt always make perfect contact, some had to use plactic washers on the back of the MB to get the screws to sit tight with the MB and get proper contact and heat diffusion. Also if its only push maybe a push/pull might help with those temps.

Im putting in a custom loop in a few weeks and the h100i is going in my Prodigy build so im not to worried atm.

Still deciding i had another thread up about it.
I will probably do the cpu and motherboard first the add sli 970s in the future. just soft tubing with maybe a bay res and pump not sure yet.
I swapped the ram and got the gpu to overclock but it starts to artifact around 1400 so i left it pretty low.
