Hi all, I just built a new computer (after 9 years!):

i7 7700K
Asus Maximus IX Hero
Asus GTX 1080 OC edition
Corsair H115i AIO cooler
Corsair 32GB DDR4 3000mhz ram

Firstly, I have no overclocking experience whatsoever - this is all new to me.

So I put everything together and it boots up into bios with no problems. I understand that DDR4 is default at 2133mhz and that I need to enable XMP to get it to run 3000mhz ram. I tried setting XMP and it recognised my ram as DDR4 3000mhz in the bios, so I selected that and when I tried restarting, it didn't post.

What else do I need to do to get this working? Can anyone help please?
Does the CPU need to be overclocked in order to get 3000mhz ram to work? Or can the ram be overclocked independently of the CPU and still work?

Also, if I decided to leave it as 2133mhz, is it fine that I'm running the 3000mhz ram in 2133mhz mode? Or should I return it and buy 2133mhz ram?

I assume you're trying to use 4x8GB sticks. Some boards support only 2 DIMMs on XMP profile. You can look through this list to see if your mobo/ram is one of those: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-IX-HERO/HelpDesk_QVL/

RAM speed is backward compatible, so 3000 MHz RAM will not have a problem running at 2133 MHz.

Nope, I'm using 2x16gb ram.

I've never overclocked before so I'm a complete noob when it comes to all this. Can anyone help me out with this?

Have you had any luck? I have the same motherboard, CPU and RAM. I'm also having the exact same problem, and cant get windows to boot. Please let me know if you found the solution.

If it is known to be compatible then I suggest increasing the voltage and/or loosening the timings. If two sticks, make sure to install into the slots as recommended by the manual - such as 2,4 or A2,B2.

Basically what I did was use the ram in 2133mhz default speed, install windows, install drivers for all my hardware including motherboard etc.

Then after a couple of weeks of using it in 2133mhz speed, I went into the bios and enabled XMP and it automatically selects 3000mhz and when I rebooted, it worked. I don't know why it didn't work when I first built the computer but after setting everything up, including windows etc it seemed to work after that.

Maybe try installing windows first and all your drivers (although I don't think this should affect it but I'm not certain).
