Asus Maximus viii Gene, only mobo lights, no startup

Well hello everyone,

Upgraded my Aurora r3 with a new Asus Maximus viii Gene. Only the following lights on the mobo work: start/reset button and the red lighting behind the mobo.

I tried (to no avail):
Resetting cmos (with button at back and battery out for 10 minutes),
Triple checking the wiring,
Connected just CPU, 1 ram strip (tried multiple strips and slots) and psu,
Pressing roll back bios (although it never started so no bios to roll back to),
Checked back of the board if it short circuited (has same screw holes as stock alienware mobo),
Released some tension on all screws,
Swapped stock Aurora r3 liquid cooler with stock i5 heatsink and cooler.

The weirdest thing though is this:
My stock 875w Dell psu has a build in self test button. If I press this everything turns on (front panel lights, hdd's, cpu liquid cooler), I get qcode 00 bit still no boot and if I release this test button everything shuts off again.

Rig setup is:
Asus Maximus viii Gene
Intel Core i5 8400 2,8GHz
2x4 ddr4 ballistix sport 2666 mhz
875w Power Supply: Dell W299G
Amd hd 6970 and 6950 crossfire

Well thoughts are welcome before I return this as faulty.

Thanks for the effort!

Solution
Your motherboard and cpu are not compatible-the maximus viii Gene has a z170 chipset which makes it compatible with 6th and 7th gen cpus (after a bios update). For an 8th gen cpu you will need a mobo with a 300 chipset such as z370, b360, h370 etc.
