I went the Hero and love it, their Z87 and Z97 Heros were the creme of the crop for Haswell and this may be true with the Z170 mobos also, mines taken everything I've thrown at it which is a lot 😉
The motherboard won't make a difference at all in gaming. It's about the features each board has, and the features you require. It's also about aesthetics and choosing a manufacturer you trust.

I'd honestly go with the Z170 A over the Deluxe from a price to feature stand-point. Paying a premium for on board wifi and two extra( 8 as opposed to 6) sata ports wouldn't feel worthwhile.

The Hero would be great if you want fine, full and complete control over all aspects of overclocking any and all hardware. If you just want to do basic overclocking, then the Deluxe would be quite sufficient, and is a wonderful board.

So the hero VIII might be better in terms of features, etc... I was going for the hero VIII but i have to check if that is the correct board to me.

Better is a relative term. The Deluxe or 'A' both have great features, but the Hero offers incredible control over settings that are simply not used by most people. Not that it can't be a great board for anyone, but the need for it is usually not there.

As JennaKS mentioned, a lot of times it comes down to aesthetics (which is important). :)

I would recommend Deluxe board. It is always better to have more ingredients when you are choosing a motherboard. All motherboards in this band are good overclockers. If you are going for online gaming, do not forget that Deluxe has got dual LAN ports if you can utilize them.
Onboard wifi on this board will certainly reduce the clutter of wires near your rig. Also Asus's wifi apps comes very handy to remote control your pc from another room. I bet 95% people choose basic overclocking. So not need for ROG boards.

I have the ASUS VIII Hero and love it. The design, features and compatibility with all of the new tech is seamless. The deluxe is a nice board too. I personally prefer the ASUS ROG line of motherboards, hence my selection of the VIII Hero. The only thing its missing was WIFI, which was easily corrected and very cheap to purchase a wifi card. Otherwise, i had no problems updating Bios, running my memory at a XPS profile @3000mhz and the design allowed me to have a nice clean look without having issues with PCI-e placement for my GPU. The software that comes with the Hero board is great too as it allows full control over alot of areas of your build. Not to say the deluxe wouldnt offer that.

I would go for the Maximus VIII Hero Alpha. It has onboard Wi-Fi and more special features than the VIII Hero and for about $50 more in my country. The Wi-Fi alone is my selling point (I would have had to buy a PCI wireless expansion card wich costs 30$ anyway). The Deluxe is a nice board and just below the Hero Alpha on my list, but as I percieved it, the Hero series is better for overclocking. If you are a bit tight on budget you might like the Z170 A or Pro Gaming.
