ASUS Maximus XI Hero wifi - Does the optical out support 7.1?

Does the optical out on the ASUS Maximus XI Hero wifi supports 7.1 or just 5.1?

Optical audio supports 7.1 --- mobo handbook doesn't cover this, it only covers the 3.5mm audio jacks. I guess they assume we'll get optical audio knowledge from another source --- which I did.
