I have an Asus Sabortooth x79. I just purchased an Asus STRIX 980 video card which supports PCIe 3.0.

BIOS is updated
BIOS is set to GEN3 for PCIe16x

GPU-Z continues to read it as PCIe 16x 2.0 and not 3.0. I have tried changing the BIOS settings and re-doing them, no luck.

Anyone seen this before?

My CPU is an i7 (2011) 3820

I did some looking around. Seems this motherboard and one other need the PCIe 3.0 forced on in registry. Something about this board and Windows 7/8 not clearly seeing the 3.0 ability.

It's now 3.0 after forcing it - but I'm not totally convinced yet.

From Intel's page on the 3820
PCI Express Revision 2.0

Edit - after I posted this something jogged in my memory and then with a little reading found that these boards are not fully qualified to run pcie3.0 but many manage just fine; which you can read about HERE . Please note that the linked page references a patch which I do not know if it will work with your board & gpu combination. I would suggest a full backup before you try it If you are inclined to.
