asus memory and g.skill ripjaws ram compatibility issue.

Hi,

I'm a newbie trying to build my first computer. I bought the ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO motherboard, and when I shopped for rams, i didn't know that the mobo manual had a list for compatible rams, so I just went with one that the type/speed all match the motherboard's description. I got the G.Skill Ripjaws 16GB (2x8GB) 2400 DDR3.

When I put everything together and turned on the power, the mobo gives a "q code" -- an error code, of 53, which according to the manual, means incompatible RAM or wrong speed.

My first question is, since I haven't set up the BIOS, the cpu is running at the normal speed instead of 2400 O.C. speed, so can this error code be caused by the ram running at a lower rate?

And my second question is, shouldn't the rams today be generic enough that as long as the mobo supports the rate, it should work?

Hi, The RAMs should run at default sped which is either 1333 or 1600.
Try leaving single RAM installed and see if still the same. Make sure it is properly inserted. Test each slot.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I tried to leave a single ram and i tried each slot.. still getting the same Q error code and it isn't booting up (which would be expected because of ram, correct?)

Make sure you have the latest bIOS, then try one stick in slot 1 firmly seated, and boot to BIOS, (if no joy try the other stick by itself in slot 1) in BIOS enable XMP select profile 1, save, exit, shutdown, install stick 2 in slot 3 and give it a try. If no joy, try different sticks if you have any or can borrow a couple

Hi, I've only got the Ripjaws rams since this is my first build.. I've tried each one in each of the four slots.. no luck, always getting the #53 error code.

I'm not positive if I have the latest BIOS.. it's just whatever came with the mobo (though I did only purchased it very recently).. but how can i update the BIOS without even seeing the BIOS screen?

Without other DRAM, it's hard, might try the MEM OK button page 1-26 of manual

Are the RAMs listed here http://www.gskill.com/en/configurator?manu=29&chip=1307&model=1407 ?
Is the RAM stick properly inserted in the slot? Some require a bit more force.
Try testing with the board outside the case. This way you'd rule out a short and better control the components installation.
What CPU using?
