I have an ASUS AC3100 and AT&T ZTE cellular modem.

I am trying to use Adaptive QoS to make gaming smoother without all the packet loss and ping spikes. Any time anyone on the network does anything, the ping is greatly affected.

Automatic bandwidth detection does not help and it is impossible to set it manually since the U/D rates are constantly changing. Sometimes they are 2/0.5 and sometimes they can be 10/1 Mbps. It fluctuates greatly.

Can anyone tell me anything to make this work? sfq, codel, fq_codel, ATM? Not sure what to use.

There is no magic simple configuration that will solve your problem is the bandwidth is unstable. The ones you mention are primarily used for games. They assume all feeds are equal which works when the ones you want to favor are the smaller ones. It does not work well when the ones you want to favor need certain minimum levels to even function...say netfix 4k video.

In any case even if you know the bandwidth you need to set it to say 80-85% of the actual bandwidth to let things like codel to work. Traffic rates are not some fixed number they are averages over time so you get burst of traffic. You can still exceed bandwidth with these bursts.

In your case you could try to set the bandwidth to the lowest rate you test and see if you get lucky. The other option is to try to use the feature that guarantees your pc certain minimum upload and download bandwidth. I strongly suspect your problem is the upload bandwidth. I would set the at 1mbps up and down but you could watch the game and see the actual rates it uses. Most are closer to the 500kbps range.

Now all this may not matter. Most cell problems are other users traffic. You can not use QoS to favor your traffic over other on the cell tower. In many cases if you attempt to limit your traffic other users will just use what you gave up and you still have the same problem.

Mobile broadband only works well for games when you have a cell tower that is not congested. I know I had one that worked pretty well except during rush hour. Seems I was using a tower near the highway and when the load got high they forced me to a different tower that was farther away. My signal levels dropped by more than half along with the speeds I got.
