Asus monitor wont display and and says vga no signal even though i have a vga cable conected.

I have a new pc and an asus HC279H monitor and when i turn it on it comes up with vga no signal even though i have vga inputed. is it because it's not in the graphics card slot and if so how do i change it becuase that only has a dvi port.

Is the port dvi-i, or dvi-d on the graphics card?
