Hey guys, I have a problem that I hope will be easy to diagnose.

I was having trouble with what I thought was my dying router, it was constantly disconnecting me so I picked up a Asus N66U. Not only am I having the same issues, it seems to be worse. I have both 2.4GHz and 5GHz set up. Comcast told me to set the channel to 1,6 or 11 so I did that. No change at all.

It works 100% when im in the same room. If im upstairs or in the yard it constantly disconnects. It would always work without problem before.

Maybe the receiving device is having network adapter problems.... do other devices work without a problem when used upstairs or in the yard? Could be a good clue or indicator.

Otherwise:

If connectivity is 100% in the same room then you have everything set up correctly. I.e., you did nothing wrong with regards to the setup.

If connectivity goes down with distance then the signal from the router may not be strong enough. Some interference on the channels you are using.

Comcast's channel recommendations are most likely a stock answer. Try some other channels.

You can download software that will show you the channels in use in your area. Try a channel that is not being heavily used.

Post further details accordingly. Thanks.

Yeah all devices work similar. I downloaded WiFi analyzer to see which channel would be best. Helped somewhat but still not as it should.

The old router worked for years with no problems everywhere in the house til a few months ago

Trusting that there was no remodeling done, furniture moved around etc. then the old router was probably giving up the ghost. The new router, in comparison, may just not be up to par with what is required in your environment. I.e., the channel changes "helped somewhat".

You could try relocating the router somewhere else in the house if that is at all viable. Just a few feet (probably up) can make a difference.

You can continue to experiment with both bands and the channels - maybe some combination will work if you have time to work through various configurations.

Or you could return the Asus router and replace it directly (thinking that it may be defective in some way), or just try another make and model.

As I am sure you have noted in this and other forums, wireless signaling can be problematic with the littlest things making all the difference.

Please post an update as warranted. Thanks.

Range can be relative to many things and specifications are usually written for ideal environments.....

However, to answer your question I think you mean the ac1900 model - correct? ($199.00 at Best Buy)

I always try to purchase a model "level" up just for future growth. USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports are handy.

Reviews seem good. Could not seem to get into any Asus related forums to see what actual users had to say.

I would certainly give the ac1900 a try.
