I'm new to using a Router outside the one you get form your Internet company. I bought a Asus N66U and it runs great but I don't really understand how it works.

They gave me a terrible Ubee box.

I connected it to my Cable router i got from the Internet company and followed the Asus steps to set it up.

My question is do i have to change the setting to the Cable router they gave me to get the full potential out of my Asus N66U? Or does the Asus Over write anything the other Router would do.

If anyone could clear this up for me I would appreciate it.

Bridge mode on a modem? That's not something I have ever really thought about. With...
You need to make sure that DHCP and NAT are turned off in the modem, if possible. Otherwise, just connect from the modem's ethernet port to the WAN port of the Asus. Then, boot up the modem. Once the modem is completely booted up, plug in your router.

That's about it

What exactly does turning off DHCP and NAT in the modem do?

You want to make sure that only one device is assigning IP addresses to devices as they come and go, it's called DHCP reservation. If you have 2 devices on the same network it can cause issues. Turning off DHCP and NAT makes sure only 1 device is doing it.

Think of it like you were trying to use a Post Office address to find a location but there were two Post Offices and each one addressed things differently. 1 Main Street might be a whole different address depending on which Post Office address you used.

I went into my Ubee modem and put it on bridge mode and it said it disabled all that stuff.

Is that the only thing i need to do?

Bridge mode on a modem? That's not something I have ever really thought about. With my limited knowledge, I would assume that should work, though.

If it's working now, then I would think that was all that you needed to do, though.

What really annoys me about the set up guides for the Asus N66Ru is every single diagram in manuals shows the label ‘WAN’ port from Asus to Modem. It’s as simple as plugging in the internet port on your ASUS to a ‘LAN’ port on your modem to get an internet connection whilst maintaining the full use of your Asus router. All you have to do then is make sure the Asus IP doesn’t conflict with the Modem by changing it to 192.168.2.1 or something. All this shite about having to PPPoE and passwords, and Access Point and Bridging is completely uneccesaey and confusing. Why can’t they add a page in the manual to show people how to do this!
