ASUS n66u WAN problems

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I’ve already spoke to my ISP with no solution or help.

I’ve bought an after market Asus n66u router. I’ve attached my cable from the WAN port straight to my main internet socket (with a filter on).
On the manual it says I need to attach a cable via a modem??? Do I need to buy a separate modem?

Anyway, when I load up the router page, it connects wirelessly but with no internet access. I have my ISP username and password but when I put it in trying to connect via PPPoE, it says no WAN connection is present?

Is there any settings I can change or do I need an extra modem??

Thanks for any help
