Hello Guys, I wanna buy the i5 4590 for my GTX 970. Can you tell me which MOBO could be better for gaming ? I wanna overclock CPU a little bit, and I would like to have CPU for more than next 2+ years :) I want spend max. 170 euro for MOBO.

Thank you for answer(s).

I used Asus exclusively from about 2001 and 2011 ... to my eyes, the other players were a bit behind. Since Z77 however MSI and Gigabyte have made great strides and Asus has slipped substantially. Recently I compared user reviews on newegg and was disturbed about the following:

No. of negative newegg reviews ( 1 or 2 eggs) on boards i have used in the past.

Z87 Asus Formula - 24%
Z97 Asus Formula - 44%

Z87 Asus Hero - 17%
Z97 Asus Hero - 23%

X79 WS - 23%
X99 WS - 41%

X79 Rampage IV - 24%
X99 Rampage V - 36%

That's an average increase of 63% in just one generation. And while those reviews are certainly impacted by inexperienced users, there is no relevance as users didn't get any more inexperienced between Z87 and Z97 or X99 and X99.

Right now my immediate "go to board" below $200 is the MSI GD65 which goes for $170 here in the states. The Asus Hero is $210 and is comparable in features, components (slight edge to MSI here) and negative reviews (17% / 25%) to the Hero but is $40 cheaper. Another plus for MSI is that they have a clear edge over Asus and EVGA on the GFX cards so

At the higher price point, $250-$300, I have been using the Asus Maximus Formula but the 44% negative reviews give me pause....almost double the last generation and that one is in my previous rig and it's been problematic.

As for Gigabyte, it's hard to say from a consistency standpoint as they have changed the model lines between Z87 and Z97 so it's harder to compare year to year numbers. Their GFX cards are as good as MSI's though and their power delivery on the MoBos generally is as good and mostly better than the a lot of the competition.

I have been holding off on some Z97 high end builds until I saw how the X99 and Z97 Asus high end boards did .... given the above results I am not encouraged

The MSI MPower X99 has 17% negative reviews and the MSI MPower Z97 only has 16%.

The Gigabyte X99 has no negative reviews but only 3 reviews.... but board looks interesting; same for the Z97 Gaming G1

As for Tech Support, seems everyone is horrible these days..... no longer a matter of who's good and who ain't more like "degrees of horrible"..... most of my experiences have been w/ Asus obviously but what has great 2 years ago is now incredibly bad .... no doubt given the number of issues raised in the negative reviews, staff is a bit bogged down. MSI has answered my questions when i have called with an issue but then again, I haven't had any serious problems.... Gigabyte have almost no experience with but you'll see complaints abound with all 3 on their forums.

I thought even normal intel(non K) can be OC on Zxx MOBO, but that's right, can not be, still 4590 I will buy, it's decent CPU. Anyway, I don't like MSI, bad experiences with it, me and my girlfriend as well. GIGABTE or ASUS only. But I think HERO or Z97X 7 from Gigabyte I will buy :) But ASUS has a bigger place in my heart than GB 😀 I need to upgrade CPU for Dying Light and The Witcher 3 and my FX 6300 and old 990FX-ud3 is bad for it 🙁

Those types of experiences are hard to shake.... for one reason another we tend to believe that because we had a great board in 2012 or a bad board in 2012 that this somehow means that we are on sound ground having expectations that a 2014 board will result in a similar experience..... but things change .... In 2012 the NY Giants won the superbowl, where are they today ? (golfing).

With the Z87 Asus Formula, 24% of users were unhappy.
With the Z97 Asus Formula, 44% of users were unhappy.

Clearly, things have changed. Asus Formula users are almost twice as unhappy this year (Z97) than last (Z87)

I haven't found a comfort zone as yet with Z97 .... after using Asus for so many years, my WS failed and took 3 months to get a replacement....dunno if you are aware but that board comes with premium warranty service where the replacement board gets shipped before you send in the old one. Have two hero Builds and one Formula build that are afflicted with the BIOS Clock freeze bug which afflicts Asis Z87 / Z97 boards

"I have 3 boards with this issue in my shop and EVERY client system I built has this problem. I have tried EVERY fix in this thread, nothing works for more then a few days. Flashed BIOS, reset to factory, replaced batteries. NOTHING. "

The entire Z87 lineup is afflicted, there are numerous posts on your forums detailing this. here's **some** of them

A BIOS fix was announced on June 11, for 12 different non ROG boards .... no such BIOS with the stated annotations have ever been released and Asus now denies any report or knowledge of such a problem ... despite their announced BIOS and other fixes on the forums as well as the above threads..

So if you are down to Asus and Gigabyte only, I'd say Gigabyte. Asus is in a slump, given their history I'm sure they will rebound. I was hoping Z97 would bring them back up consumers who have bought the products are saying no. There's always the luck of the draw in electronics.... hence the "lottery" designation oft used. A certain % of every product fails but the numbers are going in the wrong direction here.
