Thanks to those who suggested this motherboard for me. I just pick one up this weekend and I need a little help. I have two slot 1 600B/133Mhz CPU. Two 128MB PC100 memory should be here later today from Crucial (Should I have gotten PC133?). I need to overclock the motherboard FSB to 133Mhz. What are the settings for me to do that? If you don’t know the answer, can you point me to a resource?

Thanks

Note: Sorry for posting on this board. I did not get any replies in the Overclock Forum. Your help is much appreciated.

Ummm...
#1 - you want PIII-600E not B if you want to o/c your cpu. 600B has a 4.5x multiplier which means at the default board speed (100FSN) it'll run at 450MHz and overclocked to 133 it'll run at 600MHz. The 600E has a default multiplier of 6x which means it'll run at 600MHz with 100FSB and 800MHz with an overclocked 133FSB.

#2 - I would suggest PC133 sdram if you want to run the board overclocked to 133FSB.

#3 - To change the FSB you have to change the jumpers around on the m/b. As for a resource I'd suggest reading the manual.

Yes, the 600EB is a bad choice. This is a great board, but jumper settings take it only up to 112MHz FSB, which will underclock the processor to 504 MHz. Get the 600E, which, at 112MHz, will go to 672, or the 700E, which will go to 784 at 112MHz FSB. Both of these are relatively inexpensive. For faster processors, the 850 is a good choice as it will go to 952 at 112 MHz FSB.

Thanks. Since I do have the two slot 1 600B/133 (katmai) CPU and can not return it, I am SOL with the ASUS P2B-D. I hope I can return the motherboard since I got it this weekend and pick up a 133 FSB mobo. I need dual CPU mobo with least one ISA and the only mobo I can think of is the Tyan Tiger 133. Any other suggestions?

Thanks again.

Your PIII-600B chips are really PIII-600EB as all "B" (133FSB) PIIIs are Coppermine cores. (Katmai core would be just plain PIII-600. I am under the impression the newer P2B-D boards (rev 1.06 D03 and later) will let you jumper the FSB to 124 and 133 as well.

JCLW - I think the Crashman is right. The CPU I have is katmai according to Intel's website.

Thanks for you help. I guess I need to purchase the Tyan Tiger 133. I hope it does not give me too much trouble.

Now I know your confused as to what kind of processor you have there. The katmai was only availble at 100MHz bus, not ever 133. And I believe it was only available in Socket 1.

Okay. Confused? Just a little. So is the bottom line I can not use the current CPUs with the Asus P2B-D and expect it to run at 600Mhz?

Thanks

My apologies Robchow, you are correct. In the kB0 stepping there was a 533B (4.0x133), and in the kC0 stepping there was a 533B (4.0x133) and 600B (4.5x133). These were the first PIIIs with a 133FSB.

(BTW: steppings that start with a "k" are katmai and those that start with a "c" are coppermine

Do you have a P2B-D? Can you see a way to jumper it to 133FSB? What revision is the board?

Ok, I found a source to say that there are 3 different 600 CPU's, the 600B, 600E, and 600EB. Any of these will work on your motherboard. The 600B and 600EB are 133 as you stated, so no, they will not run at full speed on your board. Have you considered the 700E, (usually just called the 700)? It is about the same price as the 600B and will run at full speed on your board. At 112 it will run 784.

The revisions prior to the 1.06 D03 have the ICS 9150XX-04 Clock generator. This one does not offer 133 by jumpers. The D03 rev uses a 9250CT-08 Glock generator. This is the same one used on the P2B-F's. It does support 133FSB and 4 divider at that speed.

OK, so JCLW promisses that it can be set to 133FSB giving you 600. Too bad you can't go up from there, but that's the breaks. I wonder why Asus does not publish it on their website?

I only promise it if you have a rev 1.06 D03 or later....

Wow, we're getting to know a lot about the P2B-Ds here.

Thank you all (JCLW and Crashman) for your help. I will see what rev I have and see if it works. I also wonder why Asus does not publish this on their website.

Thanks again
