Asus P5KPL-VM deceptive OC

Well, I ordered this Asus P5KPL-VM with no regard to overclocking abilities. But since then I caught a couple of posts, got curious and decided to see if I could overclock my MB. It turns out it's not really geared for OC. I can't adjust the voltages for example. But there are "Overclocking profiles" in the BIOS that are labeled 5%, 10%, up to 25%.

There's a E6750 on it with 2 x 1G of Crucial 800MHz 4-4-4-12. XP Pro SP2 with all Windows Updates.

It runs perfect at 5% OC (2.80GHz).

At 10% and 15% OC (No info whatsoever on whether they boost the voltages as needed), the system behaves well except for these weird Internet errors. I get those "Invalid Request" errors all over the place on web pages, and Messenger won't connect. IE or Mozilla, same difference. I tried upping the RAM waits, went through complete power up/down, even reapplied just the OC settings after resetting the CMOS.

Has someone ever seen that? Should I try to reinstall my network drivers? Why?

Odd. Are those "overclocking profiles" doing something hinky to the onboard networking as well as upping the speeds I wonder? Any way you can manually adjust the FSB to get the desired increase in CPU speed? I doubt a 15% OC needs any increase in Vcore to be stable...

Just been playing with one of these boards.

I have an E1200 (deafult 200*8) with a retail Q6600 cooler on it
the ram is Patriot DDR2-800 Pc6400 4.4.4.12@2.2v but as this board doesnt have any votage adjustments its running at SPD, but I have it set to 667 for a result of 834.

Where the overclocking profiles are I set it to manual then you can enter the FSB the board I have will run this little chip happliy at 250x8 for a nice 2Ghz. any higher and it crashes.

If i get my E8400 on the same motherboard, do you reakon i'll have problems???? Do the overclocking profiles also increase the voltages??? I just want a bit more performance, like 5% or 10% extra chip power would do me fine.

I have the same problem like Jeannot had.

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply. I have this Motherboard as well...

I fixed the issue with the onboard NIC by flashing to the latest BIOS.

Although these are not an overclocking board they're rather deceptive. I believe it automatically adjusts the voltage as you up the speed you're asking for

I have managed to get a Q6600 to run @ 3.09ghz on this board... yes that's a 609mhz overclock on stock voltages.

You can go further but you will have to pencil mod your board to up the voltages.... DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

I have managed to get a Q6600 to run @ 3.09ghz on this board... yes that's a 609mhz overclock on stock voltages using a 343mhz FSB and RAM set at DDRII 667 this equates to about a 30mhz overclock on your RAM if you're running DDRII800 but most RAM should be fine with this

I tried a pin mod on both the E1200 and an E2160, confirmed the pin mod worked on a P5k-VM (G33 board) the E1200 booted @ 2130 and the E2160 @ 2.4. (the E2160 is normally in the P5k-vm @ 3Ghz)

Placed either chip into the P5kpl-vm and it refuses to boot!

Anybody else had any luck with pin mods and this board?

Well my problem is not the overclocking part its the part where my drivers for my lan don't work!!! I have tried everything and when it came to vista, it worked well but as you all know vista has a lot of problems and when i converted to XP, my drivers don't seem to work. I have downloaded all the drivers from asus and THEY STILL DON'T Work!!!. Do i really have to go back to Vista so that my LAN Works????! Model (P5K PL-VM)

I don't have the board with me, but it's working fine under XP.

I am using driver 2.4.7.10 from the Asus site (god it's the slowest site on the net!) which is the same driver for vista as well as xp

i have the same board with a e7200 which is runiing 20% @3.04ghz,,
but dosent boot @ 30%.....any one have a decent manual bios setting..

You can adjust the pci-e in the bios to 105 and then you can get the Q6600 on this motherboard to the mid 3.2GHz range (set the memory to 667). Any higher than 105 and you will lose your internet, any lower than 105 and the computer won't boot at the 3.0GHz+ speeds.

Since this board only has two memory slots, you will need memory that is capable of 4-4-4-12 timings (either 2 1GB or 2 2GB) to accomplish the jump from the 3.0GHz range to the 3.2GHz range (Q6600). I am running the memory timings on the "auto" setting (5-5-5-15).
