Asus P5W DH Deluxe -- what cpu and mem to upgrade

Hi --

I have an ASUS P5W DH Deluxe, BIOS 2901, with a Pentium D 820 (hey stop laughing!) and 3GB DDR2 PC2-4300.

I want to upgrade. I see the ASUS CPU support list on their site but I have read that the list is not to be trusted and that there are problems using some quad cores and even some dual cores with this board.

What is the best CPU I could upgrade to without problems (I am not doing overclocking)? What DDR2 to match it?

My friend has intel Q9450 and Mushkin 2x2Mb 1066Mb on that board. He also tried my Corsair Dominator 1066Mb when OC, buthe found that board has limit at 3,8ghz.
Put latest BIOS update and all will be fine. when upgrading to 45nm Intel C2Q or C2D.

i have the same board E8400 processor and DDR2 800mhz ADATA dual memories. Working great. And all overclocked daily use 😉

I ended up going with a Q6700 and 4GB PC6400. Great improvement over the old Pentium D that was in there!
