ASUS P6T Deluxe v2 or i7 920 is dead - what should I replace? Budget.

I last built a PC in 2009.

Here is what I had:

1. Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe v2
2. Processor: Intel i7 920 (one of the first editions)
3. HSF - One of those gigantic Scythe ones
3. RAM PC3 12800 OCZP1600 - 6 gigs (3 2 gig sticks)
4. Hard drive - Western Digital 1 TB
5. PSU - 750 Watt Corsair

I'm also using an OLD Antec case from 2002 or so. It came with a 350w steady power supply. I upgraded my computer in 2006 and again in 2009 with what you see above.

Recently, my hard drive has been struggling and so I decided to replace it by doing this:

1. Buy a Coolermaster Evo 212 HSF because the Scythe fan was dying

2. Buy a 500 gig SSD from Samsung

3. Buy 6 more gigs of ram, i got Corsair PC1600 3x2 gb

4. Two new case fans, my old case fans had officially "died".

I put everything together and the computer turns on, everything seems OK, then no post. No visual. No beep.

1. The bridge on the bottom's light turns on.
2. CPU Fan spins
3. Case fans all run
4. Video card was running
5. No posting.

I have tried every CMOS reset. I have done the jumpers. I reset the battery. I even bought a new one since the other was so old.

I tried bare bones -- PSU, case speaker plugged in, and HSF -- no post\beeps.

I tested the PSU with the paper clip test with success. I don't think that is the issue.

Undid the HSF Coolermaster and found a slightly bent pin that was sort of "Curled" under. We tried to fix it, still no post. Everything will work when I plug it in.

I don't know what is wrong. The CPU or the mobo. It's driving me crazy. I have a friend with a free i7 920 he will give me, but old mobos are expensive.

What should I buy?

Also, my case is ancient. It needs to fit this:

VERY big very heavy case.

Anyway, what can I do? I am on a major budget. I need a motherboard or a CPU or both. I would love to use all my RAM and install my SSD and get my desktop running again.

My office is a mess and I am sick of working on my PC.

Please advise. I think a new CPU and motherboard would work, but I really don't know what is good and what is bad and would work with DDR3 ram -- am I going to have to get rid of that too?

Thanks, sorry, I'm just stressed and my wife is too and this isn't helping.

if you were not getting any error beeps with no RAM it could be a bad motherboard. The CPU you have is still pretty good (I have one in a system myself) but sometimes finding motherboards for those CPUs are hard to find.
I tested my PSU with the paperclip test but started up right. Also, it seemed to have no issues before. The only reason I did anything was my old hard drive was struggling, so I wanted a 500 gig SSD (I have not had one before).

I have a friend who has extra parts and a CPU that will fit the socket, a i7 930 or 950 or something, but it's the 1366 socket.

We might test this week if we get a chance.

Hey faalin,

I tried that to see if it was the different RAM. I also tried the minimum of two sticks of OCZ. I also tried no RAM (bare minimum) to see if I could get any post.

I always kept my case speaker plugged in so I could make sure there was a beep, but it never will post and will not display BIOS, although all the hardware is running right except the CPU I guess.

And, I think I said I found that one bent pin, tried to fix it, and we think we did a good job uncurling it and making it slant right. But it just might be the one most important pin.

I will try more tonight, but if anyone has other ideas let me know.

I moved from a 950 to a X5690, the xeon had issues with ram over 1333Mhz and would show the same problems. Everything would boot but i would not get any video.

Reading the FAQ on your board
2. Power Light is ON,"No beep" from speaker

Please check your CPU and momory are installed normally and no oxidation at connection part .If there is any oxidation, please clean it with contact cleaner and re-install.

Have a feeling your bent pin might not be bent back to the right spot.

I don't know why it would matter in this situation, though. I tried the same RAM. I also tried the minimum. I also tried none \ barebones. If it was just the RAM I should get beeps for saying that there is no RAM, right?
