Asus P6T motherboard won't detect my full ram

Hi,

I bought some years ago an Asus P6T motherboard. Now I tried to seat in 4 x 4gb (for a total of 16gb) of Corsair PC3-10700H (1600mhz), but the motherboard only sees 8gb, so just half of it.
I read the manual and chose the right configuration for the DIMM slots, so it's not a matter of wrong positioning anymore. I just updated the BIOS too, but it didn't do anything to help.
It's like the motherboard is reading my 4gb sticks as 2gb sticks. It should be 4 x 4 = 16gb, but right now is 2 x 4 = 8 gb.

I've tried to solve this problem to no avail for some days now and I really don't know what else I could do or try.

Any suggestions?

Solution

There's your answer. Each stick is actually 2gb, not 4. What you have is two 2x2gb kits, hence why 4gb is written on the labels.
So starting from the CPU, going to the edge of the board it's

4gb
4gb
empty
4gb
empty
4gb

Right?

Is it just windows where it's not showing? Can you see all 4 sticks in BIOS?

Check under boot in msconfig, do you have 'maximum memory' ticked at all?

Asus boards are funny for ram, push the side in where the lever doesn't move first, then do the locking side.

- Yes, I inserted the ram just like that.

- My Windows 7 Enterprise (which has a 192gb memory limit or something like that, so I'm not memory-capped) shows 8gb; even BIOS and CPU-Z show a total of 8gb of ram.

- I checked under msconfig and I haven't the maximum memory ticked at all. Should I tick the box?

I've already tried reseating the ram multiple times: it's placed well, like the method you explained, locked and loaded and tight!
Hehe I'm starting to lose hope.

I'd like to trash this motherboard in the garbage bin right now, but my cpu—which still is quite decent—unfortunately uses a 1366 socket, and it's rare to find motherboards compatible with a 1366 socket in 2014.

It would be expensive trash, the mobo is worth more than your CPU right now lol. Besides, 8gb ram is enough for almost anything :)

Don't tick the box in msconfig, leave it unticked.

Did you buy it as a 4 piece kit, or 2 packs of two?

Handle the ram carefully when you do this
- Test each stick individually in slot A1, one at a time
- if they all work successfully, take one stick and try it in every slot one at a time
- Assuming you've done this then you'll know that every stick and every slot is fully functional and shit gets a bit harder...

I also own a P6T but I'm only using 8gb, so I've not tried more than two sticks at a time.

I bought the RAM as a 4 piece of kit, if my memory serves right.

Heh, shit's getting harder by the way 😉 I tried and tested every stick and every slot yesterday. They all work, but each stick of ram gets recognised as a stick of 2gb—and that's the main problem, because my sticks are 4gb! 😀
I don't know if it matters, but on each stick there's written "2x2 4gb ram".

If I could get it to recognise each stick as a 4gb then my problem would be solved.

Sorry for digging this post out but, I have exactly the same issue and i'm sure my RAM sticks are 4GB each.

Really dont no why this board can only "see" 2GB out of 4GB Sticks... 🙁

Same here
I have the following configuration of rams :
Slot #1 - DDR3-1333 - 2046MB - Corsair
Slot #2 - DDR3-1333 - 2046MB - Corsair
Slot #3 - DDR3-1333 - 2046MB - Corsair
Slot #4 - DDR3-1333 - 2046MB - Corsair
Slot #5 - DDR3-1333 - 4096MB - Samsung
Slot #6 - DDR3-1333 - 4096MB - Samsung

It shows only 12 GB (11 GB usable)
I have checked the slots individually with 4 GB stick & it works/boots fine but after all testing, I don't see 16 GB & sometimes it just goes to 4GB - I am half mad now.

I've just had a similar problem on an i7 upgrading from 6GB to 8GB RAM, It kept showing as 6 GB When I had 10GB in on a P6T-SE it should be 10 ideally, but the board wont have it, Ive been looking around the forums and gathering answers, and have tested some MOBO configs with my Ram, I'm only writing to say that if anyone is having difficulties try this layout for Tri Channel

Put the Ram in slots 2,4,5 & 6 (Mainly primaries and one secondary)
Leave slots 1 & 3 Empty

And if you have 6 sticks? I have 3x2GB and 3x1GB

Just referencing the manual for the ASUS P6T Motherboard User Guide as far as this situation on the memory goes.

P6T specifications summary

"Memory:6 x DIMM, max. 12GB, DDR3 2000 (O.C.) / 1866 (O.C.)..." ect ect..

Then under section 2.4.2 Memory configurations it says:

"You may install 1GB and 2GB unbuffered and non-ECC DDR3 Dimms into Dimm sockets."

Sounds to me ASUS P6T motherboard maxes out and only allows up to 12GB of RAM at the most.

I think everybody is missing the point, it is a triple channel motherboard if you populate all three of the same channel I believe it will only read the sticks the same as the smallest one.(to use it in triple channel). I have 3x4GB in my P6t and it reads them as 12Gb.

Sorry for posting again.I tried my 3x2GB kit only, in orange slots(A1, B1, C1) and I can only see 4gbs.(instead of 6)
All options in bios are in AUTO. Do I have to set speed manual in 1066?

I have exactly the same issue: 3x2GB in A1-B1-C1 slots, windows10 can read just 4 GB.

pippomec if you can, try adding one more set of 3x2 and see what happens.
I have 3x2GΒ in A1-B1-C1 and 3x1Gb in A2-B2-C2 and I see only 6gb.

Now I am trying to find a same 3x2 Gb set and check if it shows 8gb...
