ASUS P7P55D-LE memory woes

Hi, first time poster here, looks like the place to get solid advice!

I've inherited a 6yr old PC and am bringing it (relatively) up to date as much as possible. Graphics card sorted but upgrading from 2x 2gig memory modules is proving a big issue.

I made the rookie error of not checking the (woefully out of date) compatibility list and got a single 8gig stick of HyperX FURY Series 8GB DDR3 1866MHz CL10 DIMM.

The BSOD pops up when getting to the early stages of Windows 10 booting but it goes no further.

Tried many settings in BIOS including the 'memtest!' button on the mobo to no avail.

Also tried the following -

Different slots
Making sure seated correctly
Downclocking (?) the memory to 1600, 1333 and various other settings.
The 2-3 other options in BIOS that are supposed to handle memory compatibility etc

I have read both that 8gig modules can't be used and that they can so colour me confused!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Geforce GTX 1050ti
ASUS P7P55D-LE mobo

Solution

Start with single increase (I don't know how much that it would on that board, 0.05 V?) and try going to Windows, if no go, increase again and repeat. Up to 1.65 V if necessary.
...
Your motherboard only supports ram sticks up to 4 Gb size. Two sources for this:
> max ram allowed for this board is 16 Gb, 4 slots so max stick is 16/4 =4
> QVL lists only sticks of 1 Gb to 4 Gb in size.

However, it is sometimes possible for the board to accept too big stick and see only max allowed ram (so in this case board could see 4 Gb). The fact that board boots tells me it might be possible in this case, and the reason for BSODs may be different. Did you actually mixed your old sticks with this one?

Figured the QVL might be very out of date (2009)?

No, just tried using the single stick on its own. The BIOS reports it in full (8114 or something) and bios goes all the way up to 2000ghz. I've tried setting it to 1333 and 1600 but no joy.

I wondered if it was a CPU issue too?

QVL is usually updated only first few months after board release, so no surprise it is outdated.
CPU supports 16 Gb so I don't believe it would cause such problem.
Have you tried setting slightly higher voltage for RAM? Maybe that would make it more stable. Also did you run memtest86, to make sure that it is working correctly AND memtest can use all 8 Gb?

Crap. Just read this....

Hi pthruderp,
Our HyperX Fury memory is not compatible with the ASUS P7P55D LE motherboard. Our current 4GB memory is Single Rank and that motherboard can only support Dual Rank 4GB memory modules. We no longer support that motherboard as we no longer manufacture memory that is compatible with it.

Thank you for considering HyperX Fury memory,

Well, that is not much of help as they wrote about 4 Gb ram and yours is 8 Gb. Typical response from customer support - they miss the point altogether.
