ASUS P8P67 PRO dead. How to confirm?

Hello!

just an hour ago my rig just switched itself off abruptly and didnt wake up anymore. What i manage to find out is:
- Mobo green light is lit
- when I try to turn on PC, CPU led flashes red for split second, CPU cooler nudge a bit but doesnt spin and nothing happens. dead silence
- when I unplug the CPU power cable from PSU and switch PC on, all fans starts up and keep spinning (red CPU LED is obviously lit up).
- tested all possible easy solutions (RAM, clearing CMOS, unplugging all exra power sources, taking off he VGA etc). No

I am in a bit of the bother as I have no option of testing/borrowing another 1155 MoBo+CPU for testing so I am not sure whether its the MB gone or MB + CPU as I heard it happens. Also - can it be CPU itself? MoBo seem to be the main suspect though 🙁

My rig is 2 yrs old, never had single problem with it until today 🙁
any help as to confirm my suspitions will be greatly appreciated.

First you might try a different power supply. These could be the symptoms of a bad PSU also (it can happen that it still lights up the LEDs)

Hit it with a hammer. Guaranteed to be dead!

In all seriousness, the Intel 6 series chipsets and Asus P8 series motherboards are about as good as they get. I'm going to side with SchizTech and suggest that you try booting it with another PSU. This is extremely common.

I would agree with the above 2... Those are all classic sings of a bad PSU, failing under the load of starting your system, did you have an overclock on the CPU adding to the stress?

Either bad PSU or bad motherboard could cause this. Only good way to tell is to swap them out.

TBH, I didnt suspect my Antec at all and I would think its the last thing that actually went, but that is in fact the easiest component to check and I will hence start with it. Have old Dell LGA775 in home, I hope its PSU will be standard enough to connect it to my MoBo and give it a try.
If PSU turns to be ok - is there any way to confirm whether its MoBo or CPU gone WITHOUT swapping?

I don't think so. If a new PSU does not fix it you will just have to replace the motherboard.

You say the PC shut down by itself, it no longer powers on, how long was it running, powered on, prior tothe dilemma? Were you doing anything? PC gaming?

Usually, game play or video editing or programming for more than 6 hours continuously can impact on all resources causing such a shutdowen. I think that the videocard might be the problem causing the issue. remove the video card and try onboard video out. If it powers or beeps, it then could be shorted ram.

I doubt the PSU, which I usually blame.

The thermal paste may have dried over the past 2 years, best to check it.

I excluded PSU from the equasion - works perfectly in different PC, its not PSU. Would be very suprised if that Antec went off anyway...

I dissasembled everything, disconnected everything, left Mobo with CPU only and tried one last time - the same strory. FOr sure, either CPU or MB or both are dead.
My problem now is, as I said, I have no option of swapping or checking elsewhere. The only thing I can do is to send both pieces for RMA and await reply.
As I have never done it so far (lucky me..) can anybody tell me what actually happens if part sent for RMA (say, the CPU) is actually ok? Do they charge for that? do they send it back? What is the procedure?


TenPc - tx for your advices, but it doesnt appply to my case - it wasnt shutdown related to overstress, neither termal or VGA problem - something just gave up after 2 yrs of use, just not sure what.
My rig was allways nicely cooled and de-dusted (6x14'fans + custom CPU cooler in CM690II) so this time I really have to blame hardware failure.

ps - after taken CPU off, checked it thoroughly nd MB aswell - no signs of burn, stress, fatigue, blown caps, etc - both parts look ok without any external signs of damage. CPU cooler was firmly attached, thermal paste still nice and sticky.

So, your Pc turned off by itself, how long had bit been on?
When was the last time you had shut down (not sleep or hibernate) the PC?

Remove all the sata cables from the motherboard (remember which ones went where for what device), disconnect all the power cables from those devices, and remove the video card so all you have connected is the ram and the CPU and the PSU connectors. Also remove the connectors of the fans to the motherboard then try to power up. Not necessary to have monitor, you just want to see if the cpu fan is moving, and that the motherboard light is on.

Now, if that works, Power off, add one fan to a connector then power on. Do that six times until all the fans are connected. Not sure how you are getting six fans to work, are you using molex cables?

Are all te fans the same v/a?
If you are using molex cables for some of the fans, are they on the same cable line as other devices?

What is your video card?

bfore suspecting costly items like cpu or mb, pl confirm memstick.

Remove the RAM and CPU completely. The board should still startup.
Rarely does a bad CPU cause startup failure.

Maybe I didnt describe it precisely, so I will expand. Yesterday I took the MoBo out of case and connected it on the bench on its own. I had:

- MoBo with CPU inserted and cooler connected
- PSU connected
NOTHING ELSE. no Memory, no VGA, no other acessories, nothing.

I powered it up. CPU fan nudged (like literally - moved its blade about 1 milimiter) CPU red LED (Asus board have red led that indicates that CPU is ok/fail) flashed for half second and nothing happened. DEAD.
anytime I started to powerup (after switching off/on PSU) same thing happened.

Next, I removed 8pin connector that goes from PSU to MoBo that leads the power to CPU. Powered it on.
-CPU fan started spinning.
-red LED for CPU lit up constantly, that is obvious as CPU was not powered.
There was no point of checkinh if it POST for obvious reason

Next, I removed the CPU from MB. Left cpu fan connected to see what happens. Powered it up. nothing happened. No LED flash, no fan nudge - compeletely dead. No metter if 8pin connectors were in or out.


Not sure how to interprete the results. How come, if 8pin connectors removed, MB does start up? Why if connected, it doesnt? Is it CPU failing it to start or MB problem not powering the LGA socket properly?


Smeezekitty - I dont think MB without CPU will start up. Didnt expect it to anyway, but checked anyway. Without CPU even the fans dont start

that should explain what is hoing on when I try to powerup.
When you disregard all comments on not having HSF on, you will notice lots of ppl with ASUS mobos complaining on similar issue. VRM seem to be the case as mentioned by one comment:

In your case, you have a bad voltage regulator (VRM). When the motherboard shorts while the 4 or 8 pin cpu 12v atx power connector is connected to the motherboard, it is because your power supply is trying to protect your cpu from shorting itself. With a damaged, or broken VRM, voltage can not be regulated to a sustainable toleration of the processor spec, and the power supply notice this and cut off imediatly to further more damage the processor itself.
"


also, when you google the problem, lots of people actualy points out the VRM circutry causing the problem. I will consider it as confirmation of MB failure and start with RMA process with just that part. I will hope (and pray 😛) that CPU is ok and will tes it when MB comes back after warranty, providing claim is validated.

That is odd. My LGA775 board I installed recently started without a CPU.

I guess it varies by the board.
A dead VRM could also cause the failure to start.

Without swapping or RMAing there is no way to know what the culprit is.

smeezekitty - dunno, maybe 1155's are different, maybe it just proves the MB failure, but as you mentioned, VRM seem to be the main culprit now.
Will RMA the mobo first and see what happens. I really hope CPU is ok and no harm done...

i have had this problem a couple of times before... i would say there is a 95% chance it is your mobo, 5% chance its the cpu.
Fortunately the cpu usually survives such things (in my experience..)
