A friend and I were trying a build outside of the case and when I was trying to install the cpu we both thought that we had to put way too much tension on the chip to make it lock into place, I'm wondering if one needs that much tension to install the chip or if we were doing something wrong.

You should not have to put any pressure on the CPU to get it to sit. The CPU has 2 notches that line up with the socket. Make sure that the notches line up then lock it in place.

You will have to put enough tension on the lever to get it to lock though. But, you shouldn't feel like you are forcing it down.
