Hey I've just finished building a computer for my first time and I got this annoying error which might indicate of error in motherboard:

Without GPU; should run on the integrated GPU but when it boot up it gives 1 long and 3 short beeps - indicates of no VGA according to manual.

With GPU: no problem at all, boots up perfect.

Specs:
OCZ Vertex 3 Solid State Drive, 120GB
Intel Core i5 2550K Sandy Bridge
ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3
Corsair 8GB DDR3 1866MHz (2x4) XMS3
Cooler Master Silent Pro M850
Noctua NH-D14
(old GPU: Nvidia 8800GT: Alpha Dog edition)

Want to know what can cause this problem and whether or not this will have an impact later on - will get a HD 7870 soon but still if this problem can endanger my system it'd suck

I can't say for sure, but there is an option in the BIOS that says something to the effect of "Choose boot graphics"

If it is set to PCI, it will only look for graphics on the PCIe slot. If it is set to internal, it will only look for onboard graphics. There is also an option that it will do both. I would check that setting before going much further.

The i5 2550K has no integrated GPU, that's why you got those error beeps. You CPU needs a discrete GPU to run.
Here is a link about Core i5 2550K: http://ark.intel.com/products/65647/Intel-Core-i5-2550K-Processor-(6M-Cache-3_40-GHz)?wapkw=i5+2550k

Buy the best GPU in the market. I think nVidia just released the GTX 680, that would be amazing and a very powerful GPU with a high price tag of course.

Yeah the price is quite high but the Radeon HD 7870 delivers what I need - if I need more power I could buy another one and run it in crossfire ^^

Another thing, are you using an SSD for OS and HDD for data storage? I ask this bcoz if you haven't yet tried to use SSD, it would a big increase in performance if you have an SSD intalled with the OS(Win 7) on it. I've been using HDD before for my OS and my booting time is 1 min and 20 sec. but when I installed SSD for my OS connected at SATA III(6Gb/s) my PC boots in ony 12 sec. and when I open applications it's less than seconds.

Yeah SSD is awesome for OS because of the speed but HDD is still the best for storage because of the $/GB ^^

Once I got the new GPU (within a week) I'll start experimenting with overclocking - I'm a newb so gonna read a lot of guides ^^
The CPU's temperature is 21 celcius when idle (Will run tests tomorrow to see max temp) so the cooler I bought does a great job cooling it =]
