Hello folks at TH:
First, here is my setup:
Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V LK (BIOS ver. 0908, up to date according to asus.com) PCI Express set to "Auto", further explanation down below.
GFX Card: XFX Radeon 7870 2GB Black Edition, running Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7 driver.
RAM: 8GB Vengeance DDR3 1600, XMP enabled to 1600mhz in UEFI BIOS (2x4GB)
CPU: Intel i7 3770k Ivy Bridge
PSU: Azza 650W SLI ready
OS: Win 7 ultimate 64
Here is my problem:
I assembled my system the other day with the parts listed above, and for some reason GPU-Z only shows my 7870 running in pci 2.0 during the render test, and pci 1.1 during idle. I then went into my BIOS, and changed the PCI Express setting for the correct slot to "Gen 3" from "Auto", then saved and restarted. However upon restart, my monitor went blank but my system continued to boot to windows desktop successfully, as evidenced by the windows sound. So I quickly reset the CMOS by removing the battery, and was successful in loading the default settings, much to my relief. What is the issue here? All my components (mobo, cpu, gfx card) are PCI 3.0 compatible. Is it normal for my card to malfunction if pci gen 3 is set manually? Is it because of the beta 12.3 Catalyst? If anyone can give me some insight with this issue I would greatly appreciative. In addition, I am fully aware that there is little to no benefit in running pci-e 3.0 vs 2.0, however this more for peace of mind than anything.
