Are the two even compatible?

The motherboard I have is the Asus P8Z77-V LX, and the RAM I recently bought is the HyperX FURY 16GB (1866mhz)

CPU is the Intel i5 3570k.

I was under the impression I could enter the bios and change the speeds around so they're both running at the same MHz, as the RAM I have now is running at 1333MHz. Constant display errors and steady red lights on the motherboard when booting have made me think otherwise though. I've tried updating the bios, resetting to factory settings and switching the settings to just auto-detecting.

RAM is in correctly, both in black slots on the motherboard.

Are the two actually compatible, or should I switch to the Corsair Vengeance DDR3 16GB? Seems a little safer/easier.

Solution
You have both sets in the computer? The Hyper X Fury operate off PnP so when installed they automatically try and set themselves up to run at 1866, likesly you 1333 sticks can't - try the Furys by themselves - if they have problems, might need a BIOS update or a slight OC on the CPU for 1866
