Asus P8Z77-V Pro - red cpu led, fan spins, then powers down and up automatically!

Today I tried to install an Z77 mobo and an i5 3570k in my very old cheap pc case using the old 550w psu which still works with an old AMD X2 64 dual core system (which I'm currently booted into but is currently placed on the outside of my pc case as the new one is still installed).
After I made sure I connected all things I powered up the system BUT it would not post anything on the screen (with intel gfx or gtx 570 card). The cpu led lit a solid red, my Zalman cnps10x optima heatsink fan did spin up and the green sb power was lit solid but everything would then power down, red led turn off and AUTOMATICALLY power itself back on then turn off again and it repeated this until I switched of the main power on the psu. I have since not been able to even turn on and replicate this as everytime I try and power on the system now the fans and red led do not power on at all but the green sb power led is always lit. Now, I have big mobo power connected properly but I only have a 6-pin power connector along with a small 4-pin power connector coming from the psu so I have tried to just use the 6-pin first then the 4-pin in the 8-pin power socket (for the cpu itself iirc) on the mobo. However in the past I had a sandybridge cpu installed in an asus z68 board in the same pc case and managed to use the 6-pin with it ok for a few months so I'm thinking maybe it's not that I need an 8-pin with my new Z77 board. I also connected one of the black 6-pin connectors (molex to 6-pin) for the gfx to the cpu 8-pin socket in the mobo but still no luck (I do know that the gfx 6-pin has one hole missing as usual so perhaps it wouldn't work anyway but I wanted to try).

Just to let you know as I cannot get my new system to work I have had to put my old asus/AMD mobo on the side of my pc case and plug everything from the psu back into that so that I can continue using the computer and as you can see it powers on ok as I'm writing this!

My previous Z68/i7 was bought as a combo on ebay with the cpu already installed so today was the first time installing a cpu (the i5 3570k) for me but I made sure I did it correctly as they are not cheap! I attached the backplate, applied thermal paste to the cpu and attached the heatsink ok but after putting in the cpu and pulling the lever down to secure it I found it incredibly tight so much I thought it might be damaging the sides when it touches the cpu but it eventually got locked down but I didn't expect it to be that tight, is this normal?

I will probably get a new case soon as well as a good psu from xfx or antec so that should make a difference if I can't get it to work as it currently is.

Sorry long post, but it needs explaining as much as possible. No mention of troubleshooting in the mobo manual but it appears the cpu led lights up when there is a problem with the cpu so I would love some advice please.

I'm pretty incredulous that you used a 6 pin PCIE power for the CPU power connection in the past. For reference, if the full 8 pins aren't available the 4 pin connector works fine but the 6 pin is meant for video cards, not the CPU. My guess is that plugging in the wrong power cable you damaged the board and/or CPU.

I'm not really sure if I used the 6-pin for the cpu power or not but now you mention it I will never do it again as I also read on another site that they are not compatible even though they look the same (connections rather than colour) but the 6-pin from my old psu is a white plastic and the gfx pci connectors I have are black so it confused me thinking it was ok to plug it into the cpu power. HOWEVER I have managed to get my Z77, i5 and 8gb DDR3 all working using the 4-pin in the cpu power but obviously I will soon upgrade to a brand new psu and case to have peace of mind. The main problem after the things I encountered in my first post was that I could not actually power on the system with fans running etc only the sb power led was lit green. Once I did get thing to power up the DRAM_LED lit red so I activated the MemOK switch to make sure the ram was setup ok. After that wa out of the way I had the BOOTDEVICE_LED turn solid red and also the FLBK_LED flash 5 times then flash quickly 2 or 3 times then repeating the process so I realised the bios may be corrupted or something so I went and bought a usb flash drive to download the latest bios to so I could update it using the Asus USB Flashback function without powering on the system but luckily the first time I booted up the system after a few hours of it being totally disconnected from the mains I started to get the usual boot display on my monitor and I could then go into the bios and set up everything which I'm mostly used to having used a Asus mobo with a sandybridge chip. Sadly while connected with the integrated graphics it shuts off my display while only just in Windows unless I'm in safe mode as it doesn't then. I've made another thread here:

New Z77 system built but Intel graphics cuts off display a few seconds after booting into Win 7
