Asus P9X79 + Xeon E5 2680 ECC ram compatibility

I've recently purchased the Asus P9X79 and a Xeon E5 2680. I know these will work together. What I need to know is if ECC ram with work with this config. I know the CPU supports it but I've read in some places that X79 doesn't then that it does but not completely.

Could someone please enlighten me with what kind of ram will work? I would like ECC cause I am doing sensitive work and don't want corruptions

Most x79 boards that do support ecc memory will be noted with WS at the end of the model name like the P9X79-E WS

Will the Xeon work with standard memory? Or does it NEED to be ECC?

The Asus P9X79 does not support ECC RAM, it has to be non-ECC.

You could have gleaned that information for yourself from the board's specs sheet: https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/P9X79/specifications/

The Xeon E5-2680 info is less clear. It supports ECC RAM, doesn't say if it also supports non-ECC RAM, but my guess is it supports both. "Suck it and see" I guess:

Yes the xeon works with standard memory, as for operations failing becoming corrupted the likelyhood is extremely low.

Can you please confirm if your computer goes well since you have installed the E5-2680 on P9X79 ? I just want to make sure before buying the Xeon CPU.

Hey there, it had no issues with the CPU and MOBO config, I ran 32gb of ram (8 x 4gb sticks), I did have issues with XMP as when enabled the CPU would not turbo to it's max frequency so I had to run 4 of the sticks of ram at 1333mhz, not sure why this occurred but the rig runs fine. Works great for video editing

I have 4 sticks x 8gb = 32GB Kingston HyperX 16GB Kit 2 x 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM (KHX16C9K2/16)

So I'll have to reduce speed to 1333MHz to be able to have TURBO enabled?

Did you have to downgrade BIOS of your Motherboard P9X79 Pro to 1203 to be able to run the XEON CPU ? If not, what version of BIOS do you currently have?
