Can you run it entirely on air or does it require liquid?

You can run it on air but it pretty much defeat the point if you're not going to do a custom water loop. You could go with a cheaper GTX 980 which will still perform the same.

I'm going to add a custom cooling loop to the system in the future but until I need it to run on air until I have the liquid. I'm putting two Poseidons in a loop with a i7 4790k with 3 radiators.

Yes it will run on air with no problem
