It worked ok for about a year or so.. maybe a little more, and it just started crashing, blue screens, etc. after some research it looked likely my PSU was dying (some generic 300W one) so I bought a 430W Enermax, which did seem to help for a few hours... so next I switched the RAM, and that didn't help. Then I found out it actually worked at 100FSB. It was only then that I noticed my northbridge temp. was something like 37C!

Based on that, and the fact I'd already ruled virtually everything else out, I decided it was probably sloppy voltage control (they were all over the place) meant it was overvolting the NB & causing it to overheat, but at 100FSB it was able to cope.

this was then around the time they released the t-bred 'B' chips, and I saw a couple of mentions of how good an oc'er it was, so I bought the 1700+ and the Epox board in my sig, and have had a fast, stable system ever since.

I still have that old mobo, in my secondary PC, so it does still work, but still only at the reduced speed. OK for an occasional second player in LAN games though.

35C hot? C'mon...37C is the normal human body temp... Electronic can endure much more than that!

hmmm have had my p4c800-e deluxe oc'd from day one 2.4ghz to > 3.2 GHZ rock stable cool as a cuke no issues whtsoever 2 concurrent instances of prime 95 for 24 hrs no errors (bought it last fall sometime forget exactly november 03 I think ) maybe because it is an early rev 2 ? Dunno but I bought it based on the fact that my old cusl-2 is still cranking along just fine thank you

Have to agree,

One of the major asus distributors in our country are not bringing them in anymore. Than should be a good indication of problems the boards are having.

On the last asus I had the chipset fan kept on braking, had to return the board 3 times (was swopped out 2 out of the 3 times) until I put my own proper fan on the MB.

when idle & underclocked by 25%, I would say 37C is quite high, yes.

My current mobo (see the sig) never used to be stable beyond 196FSB before I stuck a nice big heatsink on the NB, and I never saw it get above something like 35C. it now sits around 29-32C depending on ambient temperature, at 205FSB.

Of course my problems could have been caused by something else going wrong with the chipset, but the symptoms do seem to point towards voltage problems.

Why not just get a replacement fan instead of the total swap out?
