I recently purchased a small form factor HP Compaq 6005 Pro for $149.99. I bought this PC as a quick replacement but was shocked at how well it played indie and less demanding games, when it is limited it seems to be mostly GPU.

Here are the specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 B24 / 3.0 GHz
Memory: 2.0 GB DDR3 (16.0 GB max)
Hard Drive: 217 GB - 7200.0 rpm SATA
Operating System: Windows 7
OEM DVD Drive
Graphics Processor: ATI Radeon HD 4200 Shared video memory (UMA)
Graphics Controller: Integrated
PSU: 240 watt 12v

Before anyone states the obvious I'm well aware I'm not going to turn this into some gaming super computer.

My only questions is with the 240 watt power supply could I install the R7 240? It seems to have a big performance boost for $63 and only uses 30 watts. I can't imagine what is currently installed plus the obvious - keyboard, mouse, etc. are using over 210 watts.

I know the standard graphics card answer is at least 350-400+ watt PSU but all of those other cards draw considerable more power this one does. The lowest answer I found was a user review claiming to use it on a 250 watt. But an internet sample size of one isn't so great.

Thanks for your help!

Well, I have an old Lenovo M55e with a low-profile R7-240 running on a 240w IBM power supply, and a Core 2 Duo E6600. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems, but the PSU in this thing is nearly enterprise-class, and might be built a little better than the one in your HP/Compaq. I can vouch for the fact that it works in my case, but not for the quality of your own PSU. On that note, though, my E6600 probably draws a lot more power than a modern Athlon II, and you'll probably have no problems at all.

Wish I could give a more definitive answer than "I think it probably will," but everything there is based on my own judgement. If I were you, I'd go ahead and try it. Take that for what it's worth. :)

hi i can 99% gaurentee you a r7 240 will work on your system I my self own a r7 240 1gb gddr5 overclocked edition which is the same card just uses slightly more watts but same chipset pretty much and i am running the card on a tiny little 235watt psu that isnt very good for effiecentcy with 4gb ram, intel core 2 duo e7500, 250gb 7200rpm hdd, so I'm sure you will run it fine
