Hi guys, bear with me as I'm a bit of a GPU noob. I'm unsure on whether I should get an r9 270x, which I planned to do and when I have more money by end of year I could get another r9 270x and crossfire.

But then I saw this Asus Radeon R9 280 DirectCU II and it only costs ~$20 more.

How come I can't find anything online about r9 280 crossfire setups on the internet (all I can find is r9 280x setups)? Would I not be able to CF the r9 280? What does that illusive x mean in the long term?!

I know a lot of people here suggest to get the strongest card possible, so I figured r9 280 is right decision

Any feedback is appreciated, go easy on me. My body is ready

Solution
The X just means its a little more powerful than the vanilla NON-X 280.

Anyway, its a decent improvement over the 270x, especially for only 20$ more.

Look online for Crossfire HD7950s, the R9 280 is basically the same card.

PS : I have Crossfire HD7950s. :)

You need to look up 7950 crossfire reviews because the r9 280 is a rebadged 7950. The r9 280 can also crossfire with an r9 280x just in case you were wondering. the 7970/7950/280/280x can all be crossfired together and nothing else. I myself am running a hd7950+hd7970, which is the same as a r9 280+280x for crossfire.

Well, AMD will let Crossfire as long as the architectures are the same. 270x comes pitcairn and 280 comes with tahiti. So, 270x should be able to crossfire with 7850,7870, 265,270, and another 270x (any of these cards can crossfire with each other). R9 280 should be able to crossfire with 7870 XT, 7950,7970,280X (similar to the previous example, all of these cards can be crossfired (Past tense?!)).
